Do you think if you weren't allowed the Internet at work would you be more productive at work?
And would you then be on the PC that much more at night. I feel being online 8-9 hrs during the day is more then enuff .. I would never even fathem anymore being on after work. I have so many other things I can be doing!
Imagine our parents generations who didn't even have PC'S!

Re: Being Productive at work
I'd be a lot more productive (and I was) without internet access, but at this job, I'd just be a lot more bored because if I wasn't online right now, I'd be twiddling my thumbs...or typing up my final paper...but I'd probably just twiddle my thumbs.

Re: Being Productive at work
I often wonder what the hell I'd be doing without the internet! I guess I'd be more productive, but I don't have that much work to do, and I work quicky, but efficiently, so it doesn't take me all day to do my work. I guess people used to read magazines and books at their desks? Take long lunches? Pay their bills?

Talk on the phone Niha - I know that's what I used to do. IM has replaced it.

Re: Being Productive at work
I don't think I'd be more productive without it... and I don't think I'm any less productive with it. Yes I am on the internet a lot through out the day, but it is ONLY if I have NO work... If I am busy, I will hardly be on...

Re: Being Productive at work
90% of my job is talking on the phone to clients, and a lot of desk work...mostly email and research. It's the kind of job that almost requires me to be on the internet most of the day. So, I am as productive as I would be off it! But of course, when it gets crazy...it goes off.
At night, for the last month or so, I go on to do wedding related stuff, and it always brings me to this site for research purposes. After the wedding I have a feeling I won't be on NEARLY as much..FH is the computer guru in our world, and I just won't have as much a reason to be on with no wedding to plan!

Re: Being Productive at work
I get all my work done, but I do think I would be more productive without the internet. Instead of hopping online I would probably do more housekeeping type things and possibly look for special projects to work on.

Re: Being Productive at work
I am on so many conference calls on a daily basis that the internet doesn't hinder my performance at all. I surf while I listen to them drone on and on.
I am constantly on the computer though and I work when I get home too so any time that I take away from the work day to be online is definately made up for : ).

Re: Being Productive at work
I would die of boredom and if there was NO Internet my job would be soooo different so who knows what my day would be like.

Re: Being Productive at work
Great topic! Without the internet, I would have to face facts that my job is not challenging enough for me, and find another place to work I would be bored out of my mind- or I would ask for more work to keep my busy.

Re: Being Productive at work
I don't think I'd be more productive because I do my work first and then only when I have down time - do I surf the net.
