best way to clean e-ring?

Original post by FutureMrsCarrieri

I went to a jeweler recently looking for wedding bands and the jeweler said i needed to have my e-ring steamed (whatever that means). I use jewelry cleaner but I'm wondering if there's a better, all natural, way to keep my ring sparkly. I read somewhere online that soaking the ring in windex for 15 minutes will do the trick, but I'm not sure how it will react with white gold, which I was told will eventually fade and reveal the yellow gold under it.

Any suggestions?
TIA

my uncle is a gemologist and i follow his advice

warm water and dawn dish soap
he says that everything that makes rings dirty is some sort of 'grease' whether it be food, hair products, lotion, etc.
and we all know that dawn 'takes grease out of your way' LOL

believe it or not, i use the milk frother in the espresso machine to steam clean my ring sometimes. i just put the ring in a cup of water and use the frother. it seems to do ok.

I have used the frother too -- it is almost the same thing as the jewelers use.

In addition to the frother I have used Dawn Dish soap, windex and Scotch (this is what my jeweler told me to use).

I just use a baby toothbrush.

My ring is white gold and the toothbrush is more gentle on it them I am on a daily basis.

I soak it in amonia and water with 1 small tiny drop of dish detergent - this is what my jeweler said to do. Then I use a soft toothbrush and brush over and around the diamonds.

When I want a quick cleaning, I have been holding it up to the spray in the shower, the steam and power of the water really makes it sparkle. Just make sure you have a drain guard in place so you don't loose it! I do this almost daily and it really works.

how long do you soak it in ammonia for?
:)

Maybe 5 mins or so. Usually I forget it is soaking and leave it a big longer

Don't think it matters but mine is platnum. Same stuff should work for white gold though. White gold will always wear away over time (should takes years) so I wouldn't worry too much about the cleaning wearing away the white gold part. I have heard people getting thiers redipped for not too much money (like $30).

oh, I had no idea how long it would take for white gold to fade -- I've always bought yellow gold or silver. $30 isn't bad!

My ring is white gold and I have had it dipped twice since i got it. The back side of it turns and you can tell if you look close. They say that the oils in your skin make it turn, so for some people it takes longer for it to show.

I use windex or jewlery cleaner I bought at Kays to clean my ring.

I think I will try the tooth paste thing though. Do you use the white pastey kind or the gel?

Boil a pot of water when it comes to a rolling turn it off, drop the ring in for a little bit. Carefully take it out and then I lightly spray with windex and rinse. It does do the trick I think.

1 tablespoon baking soda to 1/4 cup of vinegar.

after it bubbles let it sit for about a minute and clean it with a little bit of tooth paste and rinse well!

I like to work the toothpaste into a lather in my hands first.

I has to be minty toothpaste!

I use dish soap and warm water. Careful with toothpaste. My sister worked for a jeweler and they said toothpaste is not good for the diamond.

I do this but at the end dip it in rubbing alcohol apparently it is supposed to not leave any water spots on it.

Steaming is good and tahs what the professional jewelers do.. My neighbor owns a place out of his house and i always bring my jewelry to get steamed!!! Also i have never heard of a white gold ring or jewelry revealing the yellow unless it has been once yellow and dipped to be white.. Hope that helps!

I'm pretty sure all white gold was originally yellow and then rhodium plated to become white...
