Re: best way to sell books?
I would say try Ebay, cause that's what everyone else says. I know so many people who sell stuff on there, and make money off some strange sales.
Also, as a librarian, I will of course suggest that if you can't sell them, donate them to your local library!!
Edited to add: Maybe a donation could count as a tax write-off?? Not sure about that though...I don't know who would determine the value of the donation...

half.com...part of Ebay. You can sell books, videos, cd's DVD's. Its pretty easy too!!
I like the donation thing but I remember a few years ago I tried to donate books to my library and they wouldnt take them. Told me they do not need used books! I was a littel hurt. the books were in almost, perfect condition.I mean....there had to be someone that would want to read these books, So from now on, I sell them or throw them away.

I read a lot and I always donate my books to my library. They are happy to get them. Some libraries also have volunteer groups who take them and then sell them to make money for the library for special items.
You might also want to try a hospital volunteer organization. They will usually take books.

I've donated tons of books to the library too. And even just placed them on my stoop and passerbys would pick them up. For the $1-2, I'd get for them, I'd rather give them away.

I always sell text books on half.com. You get more than the bookstore will give you, the trick is to price your book a few dollars lower than the others, it works every time. I mean, they'll sell eventually if you price them the same as everyone else is selling them for, but it may take a while. As for regular book, I donate them, it's not worth the hassle of selling them on half and having to run to the post office for a few dollars.

is there a nursing home near you? we just put my grandmother in one, and they LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to read books. the nursing home is under such a tight budget, they gladly take anything we can spare.

I was also going to suggest nursing homes or hospitals.
Are there any used book stores near you? They buy back books for the store. They dont pay much, at least the one by me doesn't, but if you just want to get rid of them, it's another option.

Lisa Rose- Actually, I've heard that there are many public libraries who don't want used/donated books and give patrons a hard time when trying to donate them. I think it's ridiculous, but a reality.
When in doubt - you could also try to donate them to a high school or college library. I get donations all the time (elementary) and willingly accept them. Any books that are duplictes, I just offer to the teachers for their classroom libraries.

Re: best way to sell books?
thanks Marnles! I will have to find out where to donate the books! I never though about a nursing home. I have an assisted living place right down the road from me! I guess I will make a trip over there!!

I just donated some books to a public school library. Tax deduction was great too!
