Re: best way to slim down/shape up

its so true, it would take a woman ALOT to get bulky it just doesnt happen like that. I see all these women worried about using weights but seriously you wont get diesel i did lots of arm workouts with weights and they got slim, not like i got these huge biceps not like i was bench pressing 150 pounds.

I also think some women can go higher in weights such as 6-10 pounds like you said. Although in the beginning it will be very hard for them if they havent worked out in a long time. Also when doing pilates for example with weights where youre doing other moves at the same time is when they suggest not going higher.

Like you said, women do not get huge muscles that easily. And yes muscle does burn fat...infact with strength training the reason why its so great, is bc when you are building muscle, you continue to burn fat throughout the day. With aerobics for example you are ONLY burning fat during the time you are working out.

agreed! With pilates its tough to use heavy weights because you are concentrating on something else at the same time! I am a huge proponent of strength training over cardio. Yes you need cardio to lose weight but strength training will help so much in the long run!

LOL i am the same way, i strongly recommend strength training. It does help in the long run, you should build your muscles not to get bulky but should work them out. I think its great to do a combo. If you focus on just one thing then you are eliminating something else that you really need. I also saw this trainer on the view who talked about this alot and said that if you ONLY run how its not good for you in the long run. At first i was shocked i have to say, but then he got into it and gave reasons why and it made alot of sense.

Definitely..ya gotta train all aspects of your body. For me, I can;'t run. My knees can't take it. So I do other things that give me as good of a cardio workout and strength train for my muscles. I have seen lots of runners who are in great shape but look a little too string bean like for me..that's not what I am goin for!

lol its funny but i also cant run, my doctor actually told me to not workout or dance alot lol. Of course i still do but i do have to be careful with my knees. If theres an exercise that puts too much pressure on my right knee i cant do it, not only bc i am scared since i have torn ligaments in my knee but also physically its very hard for me. I can do leg workouts so not like i cant do any at all, but certain things if i try i feel pain right away or my right leg doesnt have alot of control and my knee starts getting shakey.

I run no less then 4 to 7 miles 3/4x a week. I eat all natural foods (stay away from high fructose & processed foods) i eat 5 small meals a day & drink alot of water! I also strength train 3x a week & 2x a week i jump in the pool & do laps or Aquacises which are great on the joints. I have an athletic build. Im no super skinny by any means & i like it like that. I think overall i look strong (cause i am) and healthy! Try to stick to a better way of eating with natural foods in moderation but dont forget to treat yourself every now & again!

i agree with treating yourself every now and again. If you stick to a strict diet then theres only so long you can stay on that diet. TRUST me you will start craving foods. I would still have something i really like that wasnt the healthiest once in a while but have a small portion of it.

Another thing i did was think of foods that are healthy that i actually like, i didnt want to eat foods i hate bc again, i wouldnt be able to stick to that for a long time.

Also very important is DONT keep junk food in the house, if its there then you are likely to eat it when you are craving something and theres nothing else to eat. This way if its not in your house you have no choice but not to eat junk food. Buy healthy snacks so this way when you do get those late night cravings you have no choice but to eat healthy.

Like most people i ate alot of grilled chicken and just grilled food in general. One thing i did was use other things to give food flavor, some things i used ALOT of were lemons, green peppers, onions, garlic, pepper and olive oil to help with the taste of the food. I would boil vegetables, squeeze some lemons on it and add pepper. Or sometimes i would saute it in a pan with a little bit of olive oil, garlic, lemon and pepper. Another thing is i ONLY cook with olive oil, i dont even buy any other type of oil anymore. For chicken i would stuff it with garlic, again put lemon on it, pepper, even spices are great if you like it a little bit spicey, and definitely some pepper. I would grill it with red onions and green peppers and red peppers to give it more flavor, those few things were key for me when eating healthy, they helped alot. Find ways to enjoy healthy food. Eggs i only eat organic eggs now, they also have great chicken cold cuts that are organic. I also loved making strips of grilled chicken and putting it on wholewheat pita bread. You can put cheese on it, some cheese is good for you and they say its good for when you have cravings to eat as a snack, then you can put other things onthere such as veggies, onions, peppers. I love laughing cow cheese and is very low in calories, sometimes i would make wholewheat toast or bagel and smear the laughing cow cheese on it.

I would eat alot of tuna fish bc it has alot of protein. But i wouldn't make it with mayo, i would use yellow mustard and this other mustard emeril has that has a bit of a kick to it. I like mustard so it worked, them of course some lemon squeezed on it, scallions and put it on a wholewheat bagel, english muffin or toast.

Fish is great for you, especially salmon bc it has so many positive aspects for you.

Yoga and do not diet....meaning do not starve yourself....eat healthy foods....no whites (bread, flour, sugar, etc.) eat whole grains and make sure to eat 3 good meals and have healthy snacks like nuts.

Re: best way to slim down/shape up

i just got back from a 4 mile walk/jog the first day is never easy, but FH agreed to get up together and make a team effort to get back into shape since he hasn't been to the gym since we got home from europe 3 weeks ago.

it's so much easier to have self-control with food when i'm exercising bc i think of everything in terms of minutes of cardio suffered

yay!

Diet queen here!

I have learned the hardway that anything to strict is to hard for me to stick to long term!

I lost about 10 pounds just being concise about the food I eat and working out a few times a week. I have been trying dedicated to weight training too and have noticed a significant amount of shaping and toning

This is a great thread! I have a question for the runners. How do you get started? I used to run back in high school, but that was a long time ago. Any suggestions on how to start again?

i'm an on-again/off-again jogger. i usually set myself up with a route--a distance i'm determined to finish--and i run as much of it as i can with as many breaks as i need. eventually, if i push myself within reason, i can go for greater and greater distances without needing a break.

www.mapmyrun.com is a great site for setting up a route in your neighborhood with a clear idea of distance.
