Better Business Bureau for charities
In case you didn't know you can check-out charities on the BBB website, just click on 'check out a charity' on the homepage. Any reputable charity should be registered with the BBB. You can check out the organization's scope of services, analysis of revenue to expenses and whether the charity is compliant with the BBB standards.
I'm a Fundraiser for a non-profit and I think most Fundraisers would agree that while we hope you'd donate to OUR charity, we want you to donate to reputable charities where there is sound fiscal management and more than 25% of your donation goes to direct service/programs. Don't forget that alot of employers will match your charitable donations (check with your HR department).
