Big job dilemma! Need help! What would you do??? (Long)

I am currently freelancing with a company as a graphic designer, filling in for creative director for the past 3 months. I was hoping to get this position permanently but they are moving it to Tulsa. The company knew that I would be very interested in a full time position, which was offered to me.

However, the position offered is for PowerPoint person. I would be designing Power Point presentation, which is not my specialty, a step down creatively and a boring thing to do on top of it!

Also, it pays 13K less than what I am making right now!!! There has been a lot of drama regarding the salary and it’s still not settled, but even if they bring the salary up, I will still definitely be making MUCH less than what I make now!

There is one catch: it’s possible there they might a graphic designer position opening up in that department and one of the higher ups insinuated that I might what to stick around and step up when the position becomes available! But that is very if-y!

I know the market is bad right now and may be it’s better to have a job than not to have a job. Than again, I could collect unemployment for a while and look for something else.

I keep telling myself that I will take it just so we have enough money for while I look for some other design position.

Also, and this is a big thing: we were waiting for me to get full time job to start trying for a baby! Who know how long it's going to take now with market in such bad shape! And this si a really job with 401K and paid vacation just waiting for me!

Should I stay there through pregnancy, get my maternity leave and than look for something else? I don't know!!!

I am very confused and don’t know that to do!
I will appreciate any input!
Thank you for reading this!

If your contract position is definately being elimated, I would consider taking the job for security. The pay may su$k, but the stability and benefits are very important if you are planning on starting a family soon. Also, most companies have a waiting period before your disability insurance kicks in, so even if you quit the current job and find something new, you still may have to wait a while before TTC in order to qualify for materinity leave benefits.

I would take the job and continue to look for something better.

there's no reason why you can't take this job AND still look for another. You'd be making a lot more than you would on unemployment.

But if you just want the job so you can get pregnant, you may want to investigate how their benefits work. Some companies have a set time frame you need to be there for before taking advantage of certain benefits (like maternity leave).

Well, it seems the boards are unanimous, at lease those members who voted. I was leaning towards that decision myself. Thank you all for your responses!

I am very sad because I will not be doing what I love anymore and making really bad money for it on top of that! Well, than again so many people hate their jobs, I will just become on the those people I guess!

Hey now... CHIN UP! I def. think everything is going to turn out good for you! Don't immediately go into the job with negative thoughts... you might be pleasantly surprised!!!
Also-- I deal with alot of graphic designers... I actually know of an agency the specializes in recruiting graphic artists. If you're interested FM me for their info.
Good luck with everything-- everything happens for a reason!!

Anya, I just saw the post and also voted with majority. However, I think you should also think about timing issues, and if say a year passes by and you're still have no new job, I would then choose to TTC. Meanwhile, is there anything that stops you from freelancing while fully employed in the evenings? Perhaps just a little bit? This may help you with potential contacts in the future and may lead to a FT job.

A friend of a friend works from home doing clothing design and it works out for her (she is about to deliver baby #2)
