Birth Control

Birth Control

I need help with birth control

When I was in college I tried out birth control and it REALLY didn't work out. At first I was on ortho tricylcin, which made my periods heavier and me an emotional basket case. I complained of this to my gyno and they switched me to mercett, which he claimed was a lower dose. That seemed to make my chest HUGE, i gained a little weight, and, not to give too much info, but I started getting frequent yeast infections. I got so fed up that I stopped after 3 months (at which point all the problems went away, including the yeast infections, which I never had before and haven't had since then).

Now I'm starting to feel like going on BC would make my life a lot easier in other ways...but I'm scared about the side effects. Has anyone ever had similar problems and come to find a particular birth control worked for them? I'm really reluctant to try again, but I'm also getting sort of fed up with the other alternative...

Thanks guys

I had similar issues. I was on ortho tri and wasn't crazy about it. More recently i was on yasmin which was my fave except it gave me stomach issues (i.e., contipation - according to my doc it's a relatively common side effect with that). Now i'm on the ring and I don't notice any side effects at all. It's just a little bit of a nuisance but could be worth a try.

i recommend yaz. i was on mircette for years till i found out it had twice the increased risk for blood clots. then i did some research and yaz seemed pretty so i asked my dr to switch me to that. i've been on it 4 months and so far so goo. the only 'drawback' is my b00bs got about cup size bigger but no weight gain.

Thanks everyone...

I think there was a whole thread on here the other day about Yaz being very bad (I'm sorry, I don't mean to freak you out) - does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

I just looked and I can't find the thread - actually I found a thread of a bunch of girls discussing how great Yaz is, so maybe it was a different piill or something.

I just got onto Femcon mint chewables because my normal Ovcon went off patent (its the same brand). I was also on Ortho before but eventually it began giving me my deadly cramps back which was the whole reason I was taking bc. So far so good. And I can take them on the go cuz you don't need water.

I love the nuvaring too.
3-4 day period, lighter flow and less cramps - no mood swings - love it.

I'm on YAZ and its the only thing that hasn't made me insane!! I think I've done every BC possible and finally find the one for me!!

No weight gain, but my boobs are tremendous....I was a 34DD before YAZ so definetly did not need this increase! Its worth a shot though!

There was a thread about Yaz being bad -- I was one of the girls who posted on it. I had a very bad experience with it, but ortho tricyclen was great for me -- so you really can't go on other people's experiences. Everyone is different and will have different reactions to each pill. Good luck!

Just stating the obvious....

Best person to speak to would be your OB/Gyn. Lots of ppl need some trying around before you find the right one for you. All have different positives & negatives. I do great with Yasmin, my sis can't tolerate it at all.

Who better to speak to you about it than a professional? If you go in with strong opinions...they will concede...even though it may not be the best thing for you.

Re: Birth Control

Every different kind of hormonal BC will have different side effects. Which *****. You have to try a few if you want birth control. I use the NuvaRing and I love it, it's the best form of BC that I've used. Which reminds me, time to reorder it....

Good luck!

That's really true. I'm not going to ask you why you need or want bc but different brands will affect problems differently. Speaking to your gyno will determine which is better for your situation. Also if perhaps some chemical in ortho was making you worse your doc can recommend something that doesn't have it. They also will have heard opinions on what has worked for their patients better. Bottom line: you should talk to your gyno

I, of course, will talk to my gyno, but I feel like every gyno I've been to in the past decade of going to gynos has been a birth control salesman and I've never felt like they could predict what would be better for me. So, if there is anyone out there like me, it's always helpful to learn that maybe I'm not alone and there might be some bc that will eventually work for me (because I definitely have spent the past few years thinking that it never will).

On that note, if anyone can recommend a gyno that they felt had a good sense for which birth controls would work best for particular types of women, I'd love to know about it. I'm in the Huntington area, work in Garden City, and parents are in Port Jeff, so anywhere in between!

Re: Birth Control

I have had big issues with birth control - very heavy periods, crazy emotional swings - I was miserabel and after trying a few with the same results vowed never to go on BC again.

About 2 years ago my OB/GYN convinced me to try nuvaring - it's an ultra low continuous dose - I have had no side effects - I LOVE it!

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Joyce Rubin at Contemporary Womens Care in Smithtown.

I really recommend Dr. Lee at ProHealth Care in Lake Success, close to Garden City. I went to her when I first wanted to go on BC and she listened to all my reasons why and then recommended Yasmin. She was great about scheduling another appointment not too far in the future so she could hear how it was working for me. She’s a very careful doctor, but a very popular one unfortunately and gets booked up pretty quickly. Still, heres the website.
