black BM dresses

My wedding isn't for another year and I am comtemplating BM dress colors. I have been in a lot of weddings over the past few years, and I have almost always worn a shade of red or purple. I would like to do something different.

Have any of you been to/in a wedding with BM's wearing black dresses? I want the flowers to be black magic roses (with some lighter shaded roses thrown in too) and I think it would be a pretty contrast.

I just don't know if the black would be too dreary. It's a Nov wedding, what do you all think?

If you have seen pretty dresses of this type, could you please post them? Thanks so much!!!

Re: black BM dresses

My friend did all black... the only thing i have to say about it-- is that the BMs looked like regular wedding guests.. part of the fun of being in a wedding party is to stand out.. plus, it looks great in pics too- more color.

I was goign to do black to make life easy for my BMs but then decided against it..

I think you can have a lot of fun with Fall colors and get something that is different-- look around and see what else is out there...

That's what I was going to say. I think it's really pretty, especially with the black magic roses, but you can't tell the BP from the guests.

Re: black BM dresses

i wanted this BM dress from Bill Levkoff sooooo bad, but since it's bad luck in our culture for the bridal party to wear black, so I cant go with it.

http://www.billlevkoff.com/collections/index.asp?dress=764

click on the black/white color swatch (4th from the bottom). i think this would look absolutely beautiful with black magic roses!

Re: black BM dresses

I'm doing black BM dresses for my April 30th wedding. I originally wanted a nice pale springy color, but then I just couldn't find a color I as happy with.

With all the lighter colors, I thought the girls would look great when they were standing together as the BP, but I thoguht they would look weird when they were alone during the reception. I just kept thinking, 'When does anyone wear a pale pink dress?' Does that make sense? I wanted to make sure the girls looked great, and felt comfortable in their dresses. And I think black is a good way to do that.

Plus, my dress is a unique color (ivory lace over blush, like an ivory with a pink hue to it), and I was worried about my dress looking 'off' next to the bm dresses. So black it is.

But, the dresses I chose will have a pretty dark pink sash on them, which I think mitigates the fact that they're black dresses. So I feel like instead of seeing the black, you'll see the pretty trim color.

These are the dresses, in black satin with 'sonia' organza trim. They're both by Bari Jay:

This is the trim color:

Can you tell that I've thought about this A LOT?!?

Re: black BM dresses

I was in a bridal party where we wore black dresses. It was really very elegant (and flattering for BM!). It was a May wedding too. It was classy looking.

Re: black BM dresses

Thank you so much for all the suggestions and pictures. You are all really helpful!

I never thought about the BM looking like other guests...that's an interesting point...I was going for a color that they could wear again and would look flattering.

Of all the BM I own (there are quite a few), I have only worn one of them again. I am thinking in practical ways.

Keep the suggestions coming! Thanks!

Re: black BM dresses

I feel your pain!

I went between a shade of red, black or celdon(green) for ever! I wanted Tea length dresses so I decided against black out of fear they would look like guests.

I finally decided on a Bill Levkoff color of Euro Gray.

It gave me the formalness of a black without looking like a black tie or looking like a guest.

Also I couldn't decide on the colors of flowers and this color gives me the choice to do practically any color!

I love the look of black and say go for it if it's what you want.

Here is a pic of the color not the dress.

My sister got married August of '01. All of the BM dresses were solid black. I was the MOH and aside from a black dress I had black gloves. Her pics came out FANTASTIC! I would definitely go for it.

Re: black BM dresses

ok, sorry I'm not an 05 bride, but I had to comment on this. I'm getting married in a week and half...

I also wanted my girls to be comfortable and maybe wear their dresses again. So we did black separates. I picked the skirt and they picked whatever top they wanted. It worked out that with 6 of the, half wanted one that was strapless and the other half wanted one with tank straps.

Their flowers are opium roses (dark red, but not black magic) and hot pink spray roses (they're little baby roses) to break up the red. I found a picture when I went to meet with the florist and I LOVED the way that it looked. Especially against the black.

Then, I found them antiquey looking jewlery with red crystals/stones (necklace and earrings) to break up the black.

IMO black is classy, and while yes, other guests may wear black as well, they WILL be different with the jewelry and with their hair all done.

sorry to hijack the board...

Re: black BM dresses

I was a BM at an all black wedding.
I loved it.
We looked very elegant, and the whole wedding was elegant, formal and beautiful.

If elegance is your thing, definately go for it!

Re: black BM dresses

My BMs are wearing black - in May
They are all thrilled b/c they can totally wear the dress again, the feel very comfortable and elegant in it - not at all 'bridesmaidish'
We're doing a mix of deep reds to deep pink flowers for the bouquets
