Black tie?

A friend of ours is getting married the week after us... they are having a black tie wedding. Do I have to buy a gown or can I get away with a pretty fancy dress?

Hmm....I personally would go with a gown. What does the fancy dress look like?

I would go with a gown. Black tie Optitional is different. You don't have to wear a gown you can get away with a fancy dress. But if it just says black tie then a gown.

black tie is formal black suites or tuxes and girls can wear a nice blk cocktail dress or a gown.

black tie is not like black tie years ago. I went two weddings in a the past year that was blk tie and the older crowd did tuxes/gowns and the younger crowd did dressy cocktail dresses blk and blk suites.

white tie is the new blk tie where its super formal. I would also verify it with the bride just to make sure what their idea of blk tie is.

Agreed, I went to a black tie wedding last year and wore a black cocktail dress. FH wore a black suit and black tie, and we fit in just fine. It was mostly the older crowd sticking to the tux and gowns, everyone our age was dressed similar to us.

we're putting 'black tie invited' on our invites so that people know the tone of the wedding is fancy---no sundresses, etc...--- but if it is black tie, etiquette states you should be wearing something gown length...
