anyone thinking of doing black tie?? I'm not sure how this would work, what if someone doesn't have a tux, do they still rent one, or can they go in a black tie and suit?? Do you think i could pull it off??

IMO, i think it's hard to pull off. it's a lot to ask from all of the guests.

Re: black tie
We put 'black tie optional' because it's formal but we don't expect people to wear tuxes unless they have them and want to wear them.
I think black tie is a huge inconvenience for your guests because they all have to go rent tuxes, which can get expensive -- especially if you have OOT guests who have to pay for travel/hotel/gifts/etc.
You could always do 'black tie invited' -- I think that means you're supposed to wear a tux but dark suits are OK too?
Black tie technically means you are only supposed to wear a tux, and if you dont have one you need to rent one.

I would put black tie optional because I feel that it is a lot to ask of the guests...

Optional is a good idea. I can recall my dad not being too happy about it when my parents were invited to a black tie only affair.

Re: black tie
I was considering this because I want a formal wedding, but i doubt many people own tuxes and they're all going to have to pay for travel and hotels already. It's too much of an inconvience. As long as they wear a suit and tie I'm ok with it. At FH's brother's wedding someone showed up wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts!

Re: black tie
i say do optional. b/c it tells the guests its a very formal affair. but lets them off the hook if they dont own one but they know they still need to dress especially nice

Re: black tie
optional, it's just too much to ask of people these days... most people don't have tuxes or long dresses for the ladies

Re: black tie
haha I guess optional is a choice..but I dont really see the point in optional...dont most people these days know that a wedding is formal? I mean you can send the hint of a formal wedding with out saying black tie optional...Alot depends on the day and time...black tie even if its optional is def not apropriate for a day wedding. so most likely it would be a sat night wedding..which most people would already consider formal...so isnt black tie opntional a little bit, i dont know, unnescessary?? Hmm.. not sure on this one, I guess if you have alot of people coming for places where they dont have formal weddings it would be more appropriate...otherwise I think that your guests will get the hint. JMO... I have actually heard of people declining an invite because its black tie... i guess you knwo your guests best...

I'm not looking to start drama or hijack the thread, but black tie optional is more common than you might think for Sunday afternoon weddings, especially when it's a Jewish wedding. Jews aren't supposed to get married on Shabbat, which rules out Fri night, Sat afternoon and Sat night during months when sundown is on the later side. My parents have been to many formal Sunday afternoon weddings. Don't think any were 'black tie' but they were almost all 'black tie optional'
Everyone likes to assume their guests will dress appropriately, but a lot of times people prefer a heads up. Another bride mentioned someone coming to a Sat night wedding at Leonard's in khakis. If you want it to be formal, I think it's a good idea to note it just in case. I would say best to avoid 'Black Tie' unless you expect everyone to rent tuxes.

Re: black tie
I wanted to do black tie. My Mom talked me out of it. She thought asking people to wear tuxes was a lot. I guess I could understand where she was coming from. But, I like the fact of everyone looking elegant.

Same here. My mom thought it was to much to ask for. Someone else said that it is nice to leave the tuxes to the groom and bridal party. It allows them to stand out.
After all the back and fourth, I may do optional but I am still unsure.

Re: black tie
Quick story -
About two years ago we got invited to a 'black tie Optional' wedding. I was so excited cause I inherited a designer gown I had been dying to wear. I convinced FH to rent a tux. When we got there, not only had he rented the same tux as the bridal party but he was the only person not in the wedding wearing one. Besides like a 90 year old man.
HE WAS SOOOO MAD at me!
FH and I both have jobs where we end up at a lot of formal functions. He bought a more formal black suit and switches between black and silver ties for it.

That is really funny because my mom keeps wanting me to have black tie and I think its too much for people (more than 50% will be OOTs).

My mom just keeps thinking about my cousins wedding when it was black tie and how annoyed she was that she had to get my dad a tux. I love the idea but chances are only 1 person will do it LOL

Re: black tie
you could do black tie optional written on the invite....i think it really depends on the place your having your wedding.....if its a super fancy place, and both of your families come from money sure.....but if your families arent particularly wealthy then people might take the tux rental out of your gift!
