i would do black tie preferred or black tie optional
if ppl have tuxes and nice dresses they will wear them, but it doesn't obligate anybody to buy anything

So much better! My mother brought up the idea and I kind of loved it, but I couldnt see making people go out and spend!!

Agreed.
I did Black Tie Preferred for my wedding and was pleasantly surprised at how well the guests were dressed.

09er crashing...
my wedding was at Lands End and we did 'black tie invited.' Most of our guests wore black tie and everyone looked fabulous. Lands End is a beautiful place for black tie.
