Hi ladies! FH is in a wedding at Oheka Castle right after Christmas and the invitation said 'black tie optional'. I don't want to go overboard but I love to dress up. What are the official 'rules
Has to be black? Has to be long? Has to be black AND long? Just be more dressy than usual for a wedding?
Please share your opinions, thank youuuuu!

Re: Black Tie Help!
Hi ! My FH and I are actually getting married at Oheka and we're having a black tie affair. Now, I'm not saying that this is the actual definition or meaning of 'Black Tie', but here is what we're expecting from our guests.
Men are expected to wear tuxes. I don't think Black is mandatory. For instance, my stepdad, who is walking me down the aisle, has a deep deep set navy (practically black) tux. I think as long as it's a tux (or very dressy suit) with a nice french cuff shirt, and patent leather loafers, that should work.
Women are expected to wear 'fancy' dresses. Personally, I feel long is more elegant, though I certainly have seen a fair share of stunning knee-length dresses as well. But, if you want to play it safe, I would go with something floor length. And of course, amazing shoes
I hope this helps!

Re: Black Tie Help!
I have to be honest... my gown choices are dependant on what my students (I'm a dance teacher) bring in for me! These girls have beautiful gowns from proms and weddings they've attended and they're letting me try some on to see what fits. We definitely don't have extra cash to buy a new dress for me right now. Luckily the girls don't wear anything poufy like people did when I was in high school, haha. Obviously I'll keep it elegant. Are any colors off limits (aside from white and anything close to it)?

Colorwise other than white youre probably good...my opinion would be that darker would look more formal/elegant...I'd avoid light colors but that doesnt mean they arent fine too. And if you can get a sense from the invitation colors what color her girls are wearing (or ask he if you want) you might want to avoid that too. Just my opinion though

Re: Black Tie Help!
FH is actually in the wedding but I'm not close with the bride so I didn't feel comfortable calling her. We saw the groom while we were out last weekend. I asked him what color vest FH would be wearing with his tux and he told me blue. I said to him 'I thought the girls' dresses are red?' And he said 'Oh yeah... I guess I really don't know what color the guys are wearing.'
LOL, silly boys.

Just be careful with prom gowns for 2 reasons - don't want to look to 'young' and I've seen some sexy prom gowns!

Dress should be long and fancy. Color really doesn't matter but since it's in the winter, I would probably do black, blue or a deep red.
I usually get my hair done for BT events. (I've gone to a few in my family) but if you can do your hair well yourself, then just blow it out nicely (maybe add some curls to the bottom of it).
You can get some nice formal looking dresses at Cache that are reasonably priced.
PS - What size are you? I would be happy to lend two of my dresses.
black tie optional is not black tie, I think a nice black or dark color cocktail dress is fine. Not too short though, between mid thigh and above the knee.

I am having black tie optional at oheka- and i am expecting more than a cocktail dress. but it does not have to be long nor black. additionally i would say for FH tux not needed unless he owns one, but black or dark suit with nice tie. I am going to a black tie optional in fl in march- and all my friends and i are not wearing long.
