I keep flipping back and forth each day with Black Tie Optional vs nothing.
We have alot of out of town guests and everyone has suggested we do black tie optional to assist the out of town guests in understanding that the attire is more formal (meaning not skirts/tops or shirts without ties!!!)
Fill me in on your thought process for doing Black Tie Optional and maybe it will help me make a decision (since I change my mind 20 times a day!!)

I will probably do Formal Attire.
Most of our guests lived in the NY area at one time or another

I wasn't going to do this. Everyone who is invited should know that they should dress formally. I don't want people to feel like they have to go out and buy a tux.

Re: Black Tie Optional - Is anyone doing this?
we will probably do 'preferred' as well since most of the guests are oot.
Here's the thing: I was recently at a wedding that was 'black tie' and this was a friend of mine so I called just to make sure he was serious and so that FI got a tux. My friend told me that it's prefered but not neccessary. Judging by the reception hall FI decided that a suit would be just fine. Well ladies, let me tell you that everyone apparently thought this way and NO ONE wore a tux.
Basically, your guests will make up their own minds according to their own opinions and the reception hall.
It's also a major inconvenience for men b/c they have to get a tux and FI really didn't want to do that. I didn't mind b/c I bought an evening gown but it will probably be annoying to your male guests.

A friend of mine did Black Tie Welcome, just another option
If you have OOT guests def put soemthing to indicate the formaility. People who live outside the metropolian area dress a lot differently for weddings.
