Is anyone doing a black-tie wedding? Do you think it's a burden on your guests?
I am trying to decide right now. My venue is super black-tie friendly and I think my dress is also. However, I wonder if I would be inconveniencing my guests by suggesting it. How do you feel about 'Black Tie Optional'?
Thanks.

Re: Black tie wedding?
For the average person, I think 'black tie' is somewhat burdensome. You know your guests best, though--are the men in your crowd going to have a tux lying the back of their closet and will the women have dresses to match? I think 'black tie optional' is a great way to get around this issue.
Are you getting married in the evening? I noticed that your tag says that your wedding is at 1 PM. If so, the point is moot. Black tie is for evenings.

Re: Black tie wedding?
Thanks for your reply!!
My wedding is at 1pm at the church but my cocktail hour/reception is not until at 6pm in a very black-tie type of venue.
I think I might go with the black-tie optional option.

I think 'black tie optional' is more considerate of your guests than just saying 'black tie' because then they won't feel obligated to wear a tux or gown, but they'll know that they need to be formal enough. Looking back, maybe I should have done something like that, because I had a lot of guests who were dressed WAYYYY too casually.

i just wonder if tuxedo rental and the cost of new dresses would hurt your gifts. not that the wedding is a money-making affair, but if that's something that might concern you, it's probably worth taking into consideration.

Re: Black tie wedding?
I agree about Black Tie optional... I was at a party last night that was just that, and a good 70% of the guests dress is black tie... it was very very nice! but there were some that just had a realllly nice suit on... so you know your guys better, if they are all the type to have the attire ( and accessories) to go with it than yes!

i was at 2 black tie weddings in 2007. it could be very costly for the guests. i think black tie optional is better.

Re: Black tie wedding?
we're going to put Black Tie optional on our invites. FH is so afraid that people are going to come too casually dresses. And our hall is so pretty and has an intimate setting and we want everyone to look sharp!

Re: Black tie wedding?
I say it depends on your guests. My cousin did black tie and my family loved it! For me, it was fun wearing a long gown. I'm doing blacktie optional.

Re: Black tie wedding?
I think the women would be dressed the same no matter what. I wouldn't be requiring ballgowns for them as cocktail attire would work also.
Don't you think 'black tie invited' is more pushy/suggestive than black tie optional? What does 'black tie invited' actually mean?
Thanks!

Re: Black tie wedding?
We are doing black tie optional because a) we're an afternoon wedding, b) I think black tie is a burden on many guests, especially since quite a few will be travelling for our wedding, c) i want people to know it's a formal affair.

I've been wondering the same thing. Someone suggested 'Formal Attire' What do you think of that ladies?

Re: Black tie wedding?
I wrote black tie optional and I think that was the best idea. It allowed everyone to know that it was a dressy affair, but did not force people to rent a tux or buy a ball gown.

Re: Black tie wedding?
We are having a black tie wedding. We want the men in tuxes (or dark formal suits) and the woman in full length dresses.
We put ' Black tie Preferred' on the invitations

Re: Black tie wedding?
On the invites i think i am just going to put formal or actually might not even put anything regarding the attire. I know my guests will dress up, even for my e-party every single guy wore real nice suits and women were dressed very nice so i know i don't have to worry. For me personally, i dont like every guy in a tux, i like to see guys in many different types of suits. Pinstripes, nice colored ties and stuff like that. If i put black-tie, they're gonna assume they have to wear a tux so for that reason i don't want to. My wedding is on a saturday night so i know my guests will know to dress up nicely.

While its very nice, and ideal, its hard for some guests- mostly the men, to have access to a tux. And if you are having OOT people, its even harder for them with fittings and everything. Have you guystalked to your parents about how they feel about it? You and your familes know your guests and their situations best.

I like that better than black tie. Because then the men dont feel pressure to rent a tux- they can just use a nice suite.
