Black tie wedding HELP!

So FH and I have a wedding to go to in 2 weeks..the wedding was supposed to be in May but the grooms mom is very sick so they pushed it up. I went out and bought a really perfect dress (if i do say so myself...) only to get the invitation yesterday to read that it is BLACK TIE!

Ladies, what is the rule about floor length gowns??? This is the dress I want to wear...i could dress it up with chandelier earrings or something...i do have the gown i wore to my work xmas party but it needs to be realtered and i dont know if I will have enough time! Help!!

This is what I found:

For women, an invitation to a black tie event means wearing a long, floor length evening dresses or evening separates. A short cocktail dress may be appropriate for some cocktail receptions, summer events, or daytime functions.

I am bad at these sort of things BUT I think the dress looks great, and with fancy earrings I think you'd be ok ......

Is it during th day or a Saturday night?

I've been to Sat eve black tie affairs with people in short gowns. But the family was less formal in general. I've been to black tie where EVERYONE was in a gown.

But I think it's pretty fancy and you can def dress it up. I mean they also made the wedding sooner and gave people less time and with the family membr being sick, I'm sure the focus won't be on what everyone's wearing.

Did you say you already have a gown you can get altered? I would probably do that. But then again i LOV E black tie. I'm wearing a gown to my friend';s wedding in 2 weeks and it's not even black tie! LOL

i do have a gown thta could be altered but i dont have time to go and get it done...also most places give you a hard time about altering on such short notice. im sure the focus wont be on what everyone is wearing but i dont want to be inappropriate..thats why i was askin

Honestly... i went to a balck tie galla not too long ago and I wore a dress that was the same length as yours is. I didn't wear a full ballgown... or anything like that. I just wore my eparty dress... wasn't going to go dress shopping and spend money. So I wore this black and white dress from white house black market. No one looked at me funny. I looked just as dressed up as everyone else. My hair was curled nicely and i had make up on.

You should be fine in that dress. I wouldn't worry about it.

I think this dress is fancy enough for a black tie wedding. I would definitely wear really strappy shoes, and do my hair and makeup very well also. I would not do a necklace because of the neckline, but I would do a simple pearl bracelet and a pearl drop earring.

It will depend, i hate this i have to say lol but yeah sometimes you can go to a black tie and see some ppl in fancy short dresses but then again also been to black tie where EVERYBODY was in a long gown. Do you know others attending the wedding, ask them what they are doing.

I like the dress and think its fancy enough but don't want to say what to do since wouldnt want you to get there and be the only one in a short dress. New etiquette does say that a lot of shorter cocktail type dresses now are good enough for black tie but most ppl follow the old etiquette.

Can i make one suggestion and please please don't take it the wrong way. If you are going to wear knee length dress, dont wear shoes with a strap around the ankle, it shortens your legs bc it cuts off above the ankle so only the part where the dress ends and above your ankles will be how long your legs look. To wear shoes without straps, it makes that line longer since it will go down to right above your toes so makes legs look longer.

Completely agree...I think the dress is ornate enough, even though it's short. It's also not fair of people to assume their guests are going to run out and buy ballgowns just because they put 'black tie' on their invite.

yeah i am 5'2 so thats the advice they give to short girls lol. Yeah dont go out and buy new shoes, i meant if you had other shoes to go with it. Not like it looks bad ya know, the shoe goes with the dress, just if you wanted to elongate your legs thats all

I love the dress. I would wear really strappy shoes also. I think you could dress it up even more with fancy shoes. I think if you do the earrings, and a dressy hairstyle you will be fine.

I think the shoes are fine and as long as your hair is up you should look fancy enough. I think the material of that dress makes it more black tie appropriate - very pretty Lauren!

Re: Black tie wedding HELP!

I've been to many black tie weddings and affairs and every single time at least 30% of the women were in short cocktail dresses, sometimes even more. I usually wear cocktail dresses.

When I need an updo and I can't go to a salon I make a fancy looking bun...

Put your hair in a medium to high ponytail and take small sections and loop them and secure them with bobby pins all around the ponytail... it looks really nice if you take your time. I've also braided the front sections of my hair and then tied them into the ponytail.
