you dont have to, but you should wear a formal dress and this could include a fancy cocktail dress. when in doubt, wear black.

I would. That's what the etiquette sites suggest as well, that black tie warrants *usually* a long dress.

I wouldn't. FH is wearing a tux in our friend's wedding in April and I'm wearing a knee-length dress.

I normally would say yes, wear floor length. But I went to a black tie wedding last Nov, and half the girls were wearing knee length dresses. SO, I think as long as it's a formal dress, it can be short or long.

You can wear a short dress with FH in tux as long as its very dressy.
