Blackout

Blackout

Hi
I hope everyone is OK after the 'great blackout of 2003'. I was kinda lucky in that I drove into work yesterday. I normally don't but my neck was bugging me in the AM so I slept in a bit. So once the lights went out, I usually leave work at 4:30pm but I told my boss I'd drive her home since she lives near me. But then seh had to make sure all her employers had a way home. One girl that lives in Brooklyn didn't know what buses to take and we didn't have a bus map. She normally takes teh subway. So we found out she could take the Green Line bus service and then 3 other buses. Well I don't know exactly what happened, all I know is that she got home at 4am
But I left work at 6:30pm and drove up Riverside Dr to Henry Hudson Pkwy and got home by 7:30, which really is pretty normal time for me. Go figure.

I am so glad that FH was OK. I thought he might be on subway and I couldn't reach his cell phone at all. Our apartment phone was not answering either since it plugs into an outlet so it wasn't connecting. But he got a ride home at 3:30pm from work from a friend and was trying to call me too. I actually found him walking home from a friend's house as I was driving to my friends. I was soooooo happy to see him

We got power back in our apt at 8am (we live in the Bronx) and my boss asked me in a roundabout way to come to work ('aren't any buses running in your area?'). Oh well. 2 more hours. Not bad.

Have a good and *powerful* and *electric* weekend and for any brides getting married this weekend....best of luck

I hear ya Jenny!! We woke up at 6am and couldn't get back to sleep! I'm so happy the power is back today, I have to clean the apartment tonight as I have company coming over tomorrow. If we still didn't have power I would have cancelled b/c it's too hot to clean!

Have a good weekend!

Re: Blackout

I got home -Hempstead- TODAY at 6pm

I work in Rockefeller Center.. FH was on his way to a dentist appt in the city. He got stuck on the F train between 42nd & 57th .. 2 hours later they evacuated them.

I stayed at my office waiting for him. We ended up sleeping in one of the offices. I got a couch he got the floor.

Around Noon we got buses out to Long Island. Took 2 and half hours and they dumped me, FH and two other coworkers off the LIE in Garden City.. Literally on the side of the road. Took us another hour to get someone to come pick us up. Then FH & drove my coworker to his train station to get his car.

My feet hurt.. but im still gonna run off to Macy's to try to wheel and deal for my dress!!

FH and I sent the whole day together laughing.. our whole relationship has been drama..

Honestly girls.. I was in a bad shape. Last time someone annouced 'everything is ok, no need to evacuate' my building was destroyed.. I was so freaking out.. calling EVERYONE I knew. Same time worring about FH. I'm really glad we found eachother in the end.

My office fed us dinner and breakfast.. and it was rather cool even without the AC. To think all those times I whined because I was too cold!!

Im glad everyone is safe! It took me an hour to get home from hempstead to westbury. I had 32 Bucks on me and I couldn't decide if I should go straight to the grocery store because we literally had no groceries or drive home to see if my honey was home so that we can combine our cash. He wasn't home so I went to the grocery store and stocked up on ice, peanut butter, bread, popcorn, cake, water, and a candle. It was funny how I only had 32 dollars and I had to decide which foods were important to me. I found my honey locked outside our apt and was so happy to see him because I would of freaked staying home alone without him. We played monopoly and drank some cocktails. Everyone asked if we had a romantic night....we did ...but not really. It was that time of the Month!! We had fun though! Glad it's over!

I'm sorry that it took so long for you girls to get home!! I kinda feel guilty for being able to get home as quickly as we did. But at least you were not hurt or injured and you are all safe!

It's funny - after 9/11 our firm came up with this big disaster plan.....what to do if another situation like this comes up....we have a backup office believe it or not at another location outside of the city with networked computers and phone lines, etc...but do you think anyone thought of buying a stash of radios and batteries and flashlights for each department????? Noooooo.........more concerned with making $ during a crisis. Or not losing $ during it. Shameful.

Though luckily I wasn't stuck in an elavator, I had to walk down 45 flights of stairs! My legs still hurt! It was horrible, I live in Queens and I had now where to go. The one time you want cell phones to work...

Thankfully I have a cousin who lives in NJ, so after a ferry ride, and two buses she finally met me at 2am.

I am still recuperating as my legs are still in pain.
