How far in advance should I block off rooms at the hotel near the reception hall?

Re: blocking hotel rooms
I would do it ASAP. Most places don't charge you to block the rooms. And if you block now you will get the rates for this year. I booked mine a year and a half in advance and I got a good rate. I know it is going to go up by next year because they are doing rennovations and they just sold the hotel to a new company.!!!

Re: blocking hotel rooms
I already did mine about 2 months ago, which was like a year ahead of time. Not because there's a rush, just to get it done. It's one more thing to do so if you can do it now before the rush, why not.

Re: blocking hotel rooms
I did it a year in advance. I am getting married June '04. They do not charge you to block the rooms so you can do it as soon as the rooms are in the system.

Re: blocking hotel rooms
I blocked mine about a year in advance because we had a summer wedding. It really depends on how many rooms you will need, what hotel your using, location, etc. I would start to call around for info, then decide on where you want to block. Some hotels will charge you if you don't use all of the rooms you blocked out, so ask for their policy up front. Good luck!

Re: blocking hotel rooms - how do you know how many to block and for how long?
My problem is that 1) I don't know exactly how many are coming and 2) their length of stay. So will the hotel give me a hard time if I block say 30 rooms for 2 weeks (some might come for the wedding and stay a week later, some might come a week before and stay for the wedding). Or will they say they can do all that but give a cut off date and after that, the rooms are not blocked off (ie: the guests have to call before that time to book the rooms)????
I hope I can get this all figured out. My FH hasn't really don't a **** thing about it other than getting prices. Whop de doo. In a way (not that I *really* feel this way but the thought has happened) that the hotel he wants will be completely booked and no one can stay at it for the wedding and then I can say I TOLD YOU TO BLOCK THE ROOMS MONTHS AGO! (yeah, I'm venting)
Anyhoo if someone can let me know about how to block rooms I'd appreciate it.

you can go into the hotel and talk to one of the representative - they usually work weekdays 9-5 though, so weekends and evenings are out. they can show you the rooms and you can ask them what you need to do to block the rooms. try to go to a few different ones maybe to see what the rates are like - we blocked rooms in two hotels. and we did it about a year in advance for our wedding also.
