FMIL is saying we have to go for a blood test before we get our marriage cert
I didn't think they did this anymore.
They don't, right?

They definitely do not anymore. Tell her she's dating herself.

LOL, ok, thank you. I didn't think so.
I can never be right though, without having to show proof.

I don't think that's required in NY.

Re: Blood test?
No, no more blood tests. I guess NY hopes that people inform their spouse about VD before the wedding.

Re: Blood test?
No I think you do... especially for Jewish brides and grooms. Me and my FH think we need blood tests to test for Tay Sachs.

But that's not something that would legally prevent you from getting married. Maybe it's a modern Jewish custom?

My FMIL said this exact thing last night.
As for Jewish weddings, I do not believe you need one for marriage to test Tay Sachs... you need one before getting pregrnat to make sure you do not have this and transfer it to the baby.

You definitely don't need one to get married but as a Jewish couple you should have genetic testing done before you start trying to conceive.

I'm curious.. do you know the reasoning behind this?

Yes, because it's a genetic disorder that deteriorates a child both mentally and physically - basically killing them by the time they're 4 - if not sooner.
The disease is most common in Eastern European Jews. I believe the testing is necessary if BOTH parents are eastern european jews.

Re: Blood test?
So I work in my GYN office and the dr said why don't u get tested so i did. And she said if it came back we both had it we wouldn't get married.... *** yessss i would we are engaged I would adopt then. In strict Jewish culture they wouldn't though. But modern law doesn't require it in NY.. Alabama maybe!!!

Re: Blood test?
Not in NY - but in other states. MOH sister had to in MA....
And I have heard of people of Jewish faith testing for Tay Sachs, that's a horrible disease
But MIL is wrong - no longer needed in NYS.
