FMIL is saying we have to go for a blood test before we get our marriage cert
I didn't think they did this anymore.
They don't, right?

Re: Blood test?
100% you don't need to do this. just check the webpage which will be your proof to your FMIL that these blood tests are no longer necessary

No I think you do... especially for Jewish brides and grooms. Me and my FH think we need blood tests to test for Tay Sachs.
You definitely don't need one to get married but as a Jewish couple you should have genetic testing done before you start trying to conceive.
I'm curious.. do you know the reasoning behind this?
Yes, because it's a genetic disorder that deteriorates a child both mentally and physically - basically killing them by the time they're 4 - if not sooner.
The disease is most common in Eastern European Jews. I believe the testing is necessary if BOTH parents are eastern european jews.
I'm crashing....I asked my doctor about this recently and even though we are both Eastern European Jews, he doesn't plan to do the testing for us.

Re: Blood test?
8 states do require blood tests before getting married. NY is not one of them.
If both of you are ashkenazi jews though, I would get the test for tay sachs at some point before you have children, so you're aware if there is a risk.

This is correct.
ETA: All you need is $35 and a willing man LOL
Jamie, here is the website for NYC (not sure what the Long Island procedures are but this would be for the 5 boroughs)
