BM dress problem! Oh no!- Update

BM dress problem! Oh no!- Update

I am in my friend's wedding out-of-state in 3 weeks. My dress was mailed to me this week, and I can't even close the zipper, it is about 2 inches too small. I have NOT gained weight. I compared it to the measurements I sent them, and it is way off, 3-4' smaller than what the size chart said it would be to allow room to 'move'. It is not my fault, it is theirs!

I can go to a tailor, but what can he do? He would never be able to match the fabric, he would have to patch it with inserts!

I hate to put this stress on my friend (the bride), but she paid for the dresses (I will reimburse her) so I can't even go through my CC company to dispute the charge and force them to rush a re-order of the dress! And even if the tailor can work some magic, who pays for that? Shouldn't the dress shop be responsible? Or the designer? The order says no size exchanges allowed, but serously, I think this dress is mis-marked!

What do I do? Just have a tailor remake the dress and I pay for it?

That sounds exactly like what happened to my girls. All of them. Somehow all of the sizes we mismarked or something. What company did you use?

This doesn't sound good... my girls are ordering online.... Maybe I should tell them to order a size larger than they think so it can be taken in??

AHHHHH

More stress for everyone...

Sorry you're having to deal with this right now.

I would suggest calling the company it was ordered from and asking them to make a record of your complaint, then take it to be altered.

Hopefully your friend can go back to them for reimbursement of the alteration expense after the wedding.

maybe they can let the seams out a bit....

Honestly, if this happened to me, I would do anything to get this fixed without involving the bride. You are right - she doesn't need the stress. Either fight the CC company or deal with a new tailor. If you were in her place - would you want to know about this?

Be careful about ordering too big - I was a BM once and the company's dresses ran too big. We were all swimming in them, and we all had different tailors in different cities and states dealing with the mess trying to take them in enough to fix them - in the end, no one looked good... these particular dresses were very difficult to tailor. Just some food for thought.

To the original poster, I know you don't want to bother the bride and I'm sure she appreciates that, but can you call her to get the store's info and let her know what's going on, and then try to work it out and fix it through them without her. If I were the bride, I think I'd at least want to know and that way, if you're not able to work it out on your own through the store, you can get her involved if necessary and either fix it, or get her some money back, or at least coordinate getting extra fabric from the other BM's through her so that your tailor can fix your dress with the right material. Just a thought.

One girl is having her dress shortened so I'm hoping we can work something out with her extra fabric. Appt. with a tailor on Friday, I'll let you know! Thanks girls!

Re: BM dress problem! Oh no!

Ask your friend where she ordered the dresses from.... make up a reason, like you have a question regarding alterations. Don't get your friend panicked. Call the store first and see if you can get a replacement overnight. If you can't get a new dress in time, I know of a great tailor in Great Neck who does formal dresses called 'Efrem' on middleneck rd. Maybe you can ask him or someone else what he can do and the cost. If he can insert fabric, I can help you find the fabric. I have my own business manufacturing maternity clothes and I know lots of places in the city where you can most likely get a match. If this works out, then calmly tell your friend the situation and ask her if you can show her the dress and explain how you would like to get it altered. Also, you can probably hem som of the length off and use that fabric as an insert. I hope this helps.

This happened to me and it *****!!! Basically, the dress was way too small, but luckily i found a great tailor and she took the extra nine feet of material from the bottom that i would have need to get hemmed and used that material to place in the sides of the dress to give me the extra inches that i needed. however, it was a lot of work and some tailors told me there was nothing they could do... i had to find a good tailor that could do it (i.e. not the guy in the dry cleaners that only does hems!) it sucked because it cost me almost as much as the dress, but i would have died if i didnt' have the same dress as the other girls or dropped out of the wedding. other negative was that the panels were a little noticeable...but maybe it was just me! GOOD LUCK!

This also happened to someone i know. Luckily for one girl, hers needed to be hemmed and the seamstress used the fabric from the bottom to fix her dress. However, another girl in the same party did not have this luck. It was a 2 piece and she couldn't even get the top to come close.

I would suggest that you call the store itself and complain. Ask them to either rush you a new dress or ask them to send you extra fabric at their expense (which is what the 2nd girl did).

I would try to keep the bride out of it as much as possible. I would only tell her as a last resort.

Good luck!

Re: BM dress problem! Oh no! - Update

Everyone was so helpful with suggestions, I thought I would give a little update. The out-of-town store could find no record of the order! (Turned out, 3 days later I found out through another BM that she not the bride had placed the order, from a different store! I can laugh now, my poor friend the bride is so out of it at this point!)

Anyway, in the meantime, the manufacturer said we had to deal with the store and mail it back to them and blah blah but we don't have time and they had no records, so I went to a store on LI that carries the dress. They agreed it was definitely the wrong size (irregular or mismarked), and since we are in a time crunch their seamstress said she can alter it and make it look good and gave me a break on the $$ I think.

Then I got a message at home from the manufacturer that they will try to find a dress for me and swap it through the LI store so I told them to hold off on the alterations. We'll see on Monday.

So even if I'm out $50 I am relieved and didn't have to involve the bride too much. WHEW!

Thanks for all the support and suggestions girls!

ETA: I guess the lesson is to order WAAAYYY in advance!!
