Am I crazy to book a band without ever hearing them live? I live and Manhattan and it's nearly impossible for me to go to showcases out on LI on work nights...
Would anyone else book a band on recommendations and DVDs alone?

I don't think so. I would really try and see them live.

I personally would not. I thought that the bands sounded different live...some better, some worse. And I also liked to get a feel of their presentation.
However, I also live in Manhattan and TOTALLY understand the inconvenience! Try to pick your three favorites from the DVD's and only visit their showcases.
Hope this helps!!

I would absolutely not do that. We have heard a few bands recently and FI did not care for some of them although they are all highly regarded.
The band you like on DVD may not sound the same live. All businesses put their best foot forward in the marketing materials

I would never book a band without seeing them live first. DVD's and CD's really are not good enough.
Why dont you narrow down the bands, and only go to a couple of showcases?
What band are you thinking baout booking?

So far (based on recommendations from LI Weddings and CDs/DVDs) and I'm thinking of Skyline, Timepiece, and The Mystic.

I did. I listeded to songs on their website, met 2 of the memembrs & saw a video in their office. They actually ende dup switching musicans on me at the last minute, but the band was even better than the version I was sold.
I would suggest looking into NYC based bands, if you are concerned. They will probably travel. My band had offices in NYC Westchester, but they didn't charge to travel to Nassau.

I would definitely go see them live. Narrow it down and make the time to see them. It's important.

I DEFINITELY would not. I was SURE I was going to love a certain band - great recommendations on here, liked their CD, all positives (I even told FH on the way to the showcase that I had a feeling they would be the one - HAHA). But when I saw them in person I did not really like them at all. SO GLAD I went to the showcase so I could cross them off the list.

I knew it was a little (okay, maybe very)crazy idea.
I'm going to try and find a NYC-based band that will travel out to LI... Thanks to everyone.

I had to book my band without seeing them as well. I live in Los Angeles and also couldn't make it to NY. They had played at FI's brother's wedding and FI really liked them. I had wanted a DJ, so we compromised and got both.

Re: Booking a band without hearing them live
Booked mine w/o ever seeing them live... Live in CA... I was actually decided on one band then when I spoke with the band leader of another band I just decided against, it made up my mind and I switched bands... while speaking with him he just felt right, got a good vibe! the third band i spoke to was also very good, but felt they were too cocky when i told them FH and i wanted a few songs that were meaningful to us and i got a responce that they have a big list and know enough to make a 'hot wedding' ... great, but those songs mean nothing to US.. so pay attention to what they will learn for you if you will need that... and see if you can get someone from the band on the phone for a few mins to get a feel for them... it's something!

I booked mine based on recommendations and the DVD. I live out of state and wasn't able to go to NY to see them.

Re: Booking a band without hearing them live
yes - definitely preferable to see a band live. not always doable though. i live out of state and had the opportunity to book one band. i asked if they would put the band on hold for a week and a half until i was up in ny and could go see them play. manager said no bc there were 3 other inquiries for my date. fiar enough -- i am getting married in june and it's a busy month. i didn't end up booking, but would have. only didn't bc i found someone i liked better.
the nyc bands is a good idea. most will travel. in fact some travel between the tri-state area free of charge. do what you are comfortable with! also -- utilize trusted friends and fam when you can. i sent my parents to listen to bands when i couldn't.

The music is a VERY important part of your night and if you don't have a great band your friends and relatives won't have as much of a great time as they would with a band that you have listened to and that you love.
I highly recommend going to listen to Times Square Orchestra, they are playing tonight in Carle Place.. Joe, MaryAnn and the band are fantastic..

Re: Booking a band without hearing them live
I was not willing to take that chance. However, when I did hear my band live, they were just as good, if not better than, their DVD.
We also went to see some popular bands that we hated, but we did not have their DVD beforehand.
