Am I crazy to book a band without ever hearing them live? I live and Manhattan and it's nearly impossible for me to go to showcases out on LI on work nights...
Would anyone else book a band on recommendations and DVDs alone?

I am using a band that I saw live at a friends wedding. But I have a few friends that couldn't see them live and they are booking off of mine and my friends recommendations. I think that if you can meet with the owner/director of the band, that might make you feel better than just sending a check to some random person...just a thought I know that the band I am using, Soul Revival, showcases in the city too. I booked a band I was not able to see live. I live in NYC and the band plays in NYC on occasion, so next time they play I plan to see them. They are travelling to Nassau to play at my wedding.
I know it seems crazy but I'm not worried. We wanted jazz music and these guys only do jazz and they have CDs.

I booked my band without hearing them live--our band just doesn't generally do showcases. Although it made me a tad nervous, we had heard the main female singer (she works in the office) and we just got a really good vibe from the director (who also plays drums and sings). And our band did NOT dissappoint!

I might, but not sure yet. I've been talking to this wedding planner in NYC and she has a ton of DVDs and I have an appointment to view them next week on TV and then pick the ones I like the best, and she promised to get me in to my own private meeting and to attend a private showcase (JUST FOR ME!!!) in a rehearsal studio in NYC! if you live really far (CA, FL, HI, etc) then you don't have much of a choice.
but you're in NYC. make a night or 2 of it. i'm glad to hear that you will be trying to see them live. it definitely makes a difference!

FH and I didnt want to, but we had to b/c of where we lived and that to hear them would have had to be during the week, and we worked. FH loove them though, and there was no changing his mind..and we got GREAT reviews from LIW

I booked our band after hearing them on DVD. If you have a good ear, I think you will be ok. Ours was incredible. www.kameleonorchestras.com- The best wedding band I have ever heard and I have been to a TON of weddings.
