My friend was married in August of 2007 and spent $2,500 on a dress that is basicly my dream dress. I commented to her months after her wedding that I loved the dress and she said 'Borrow it! Im not going to wear it anytime soon anyway!' I was thrilled and then after trying it on and seeing that it hardley needs to be altered I was estatic! (She told me to alter it if I want) I have my dream dress and it was free... Only problem is my boyfriend got so upset. He said I have to have my own dress. He thinks that it is some right of passage to dress shop and keep your dress stored away for a lifetime after your wedding. It seems like some people think it's awesome that I got my dream dress free and others look horrified when they hear I am borrowing a dress for the happiest day of my life. I haven't found a dress I like better then my friends yet. Is is a horrible idea after all?

Wow....you are LUCKY! If I could get away with that I would. And honestly, my SIL had all these plans of preserving her dress....but they have no where to store it! It just sits in my parents' attic.
The fact that you love it etc perfect. I understand your FH's thoughts, so what about finding a reception dress? A lot of women change during the reception into a 2nd dress. This way you have your dream dress, and you can get a less elaborate dress to change into that will not cost you an arm and a leg.

Re: Borrowed Dress?
the only thing holding me back from saying GO FOR IT!! is that i plan i making a christening dress and a basinet cover out of my wedding dress.. this was it isnt in storage forever and its something that can be passed down form to my grandchildren. BUT this isnt YOUR plan.. so do what feels right. if you know you would never use if for anything, why spend thousands on a dress just to store it.
i think my Mom would be upset if we didnt have the whole dress shopping experience though.

You can still have the experience of shopping for the shoes, veil, tiara, etc. I think if its your dream dress- borrow it!!

Re: Borrowed Dress?
If it were me... and I had a BEAUTIFUL dress for free... and I LOVED it. And it looked GREAT on me. I'd do it. Weddings are expensive if you can save money and get a dress you love... why not?
I wouldn't tell FH though... I know he'd be upset about me wearing someone elses dress, too. He's pretty traditional like that.

Gosh.....this is a tough one.....honestly......in theory, it sounds practical, but if your FH is goona be that upset over it, it might not be worth it.

I agree you both have to be happy! But if he was all for it, I'd say go for it!

Re: Borrowed Dress?
I think that if your FH is not too thrilled with the idea then you shouldn't do it. it could cause for an argument on the most special day of your life. especially since he was already stated that he doesn't like the idea, he may feel as if you are doing as you please anyway.

I agree. I woudlnt want to see my FH being upset about the dress Im wearing.. Also you might want to have your own dress to save to show your kids, neices, etc, in the future
