I watched this on DVD this week. I highly recommend the movie to everyone. I had to watch it in 2 parts because I got very overwhelmed and had to stop it at one point. It is not an easy film to watch or think about BUT there are A LOT of things that you should think about. It is also really important to watch the feature that has Michael Moore at Denver Univ. where he discusses that it took police 3 hours (and 2 of those hours had NO shots fired) before they entered the school even though the SWAT team wanted to go in, the local Police said NO. And the majority of parents stayed behind the Police lines- those that tried to get past were tackeled by Poilice BUT if the majority of parents had pushed thru they could never have stopped them all. It really discusses how we are a Nation full of fear. But there is hope...question authority, make your own decisions and VOTE.

Re: Bowling for Columbine
we have 1 civic and 1 Hylander. I never complained about the gas price but I do complain about going to war for oil. And let's remember that Bush is from Texas, where lots of his and his daddy's friends make millions on oil. But I would NEVER risk my brother's life for oil.....sorry. I would rather walk...
In regards to the War on Terrorism...please....an american blew up the Fed Building in Oklohama..an american father just shot his son..I still have nightmares about 9/11 and I think I will always feel a different about our World, but killing tons of people in Iraq will not solve the problem. Consider the fact that Jordan and Saudi also had something to do with the attack. We don't go to War with those countries. We are very 'selective'
But I am glad we are all talking and expressing our opinions. That is what being an American is all about.

Re: Bowling for Columbine
I think this is a great thread - gets people thinking and expressing their thoughts. I have found it interesting to read it. Sassy, I must agree with you about SUVs. They are making driving around in a car so much more dangerous. LI is one of the flatest areas in the US, and it maybe snows bad 3 or 4x a year. So much pollution is caused by them and people think they're invincible in them in the bad weather.
As for MM, I haven't seen 'bowling' yet but I'm eager to watch it. My curiosity certainly has been piqued! I feel that I am patriotic but also realistic, every country has their problems. America is the land of free speech, which includes MM being able to say what he wants at the Oscars. That's what this country stands for. If you think it's wrong what he said and when he said it, I feel that's un-American. We all need the opportunity to express our thoughts and beliefs.
well..the total pricetag for rebuilding Iraq...$87 BILLION!!! on top of the $80 BILLION for the War...

Guess who's going to be footing that bill???
WE ARE.
(not saying I was against the war, just not thrilled with having to pay for it! )

Erica - I was so furious with that I stopped watching his speech IMO, but I don't really agree that we shouldn't have been in there in the first place and now look at that price tag
This just goes to show you how important it is that you should educate yourself, and then go out and VOTE come election time - it really s*cks to have someone calling all the shots that you really can't stand
Wow - this thread has really touched on so many of today's topics!

Re: Bowling for Columbine
kmc - I thought about that, but I'm not too surprised we'd foot the bill. It was us as a country that went in and bombed the h*ll out of them, so it would make sense for us to build it back up.....that was one of the reasons I didn't necessarily agree with going in, in the first place.
it would be interesting to see what the Marshall Plan is in 2003 dollars...since that benefited the Europeans immensely after WWII...

Re: Bowling for Columbine
$87 billion dollars to rebuild Iraq when we have children that go hungry every night in this country, families that live in apartments that are falling apart and unsafe, and kids who cannot afford college because their parents make 'too much' money and don't get any financial aid (and those parents do NOT make millions, live in big homes, drive fancy cars etc...just make enough to support a family, but not enough to pay $30K a year towards a college) and schools without enough books for every child. I wonder what $87 billion could do right here in OUR country since it is MY money. Makes me sick...oh, and let's not forget about the fact that they take nearly 1/2 of my paycheck and my husband's already....
the $12 billion spent in 1953 in the Marshall Plan...would be $77 billion in today's dollars...
I just hope that this is as effective

Re: Bowling for Columbine
Erica - you put me to shame with all your history! I am embarrassed to say I don't even know what the Marshall Plan is! I must do my research on this....
Were you a history teacher? If so, I won't feel AS bad
the US gave money and loans to ANY nation that wanted it to rebuild after WWII...but it was really more of a bribe so that those countries would not turn to communism and the USSR...
but looking at western Europes economy (most of the nations that took the money) it was a HUGE success...and helps the US economy, when Europeans have money to buy American goods...

Re: Bowling for Columbine
oh yes, that sounds vaguely familiar - maybe I was awake that day in HS when it was covered and I just forgot the name
Seriously though, thanks for sharing that - it's amazing how often and how much we're dishing out to other countries....at least it was successful at the end of the day.
Michele...I am torn...I truly believe that helping the US first should be our priority...however I wish all humans could live like I do...
but I wish we could find someone that made tax reform a huge issue...you'd think that a republican would...but by giving us back $300...GWB just masked the fact that he raised our taxes...
btw Teri...I don't remember learning anything in HS SS classes...the place I learned the most wasd actually teaching...since I had to know it or else...and then repeating the info so often....
I remember that I did logrhythms (sp?) in HS....but I have no idea what they are now...lol

Re: Bowling for Columbine
I am all for helping others- helping feed people in poor or war torn countries, providing AID medical attention to African people, sending Rape Councilors to Bosnia (where more than 75% of women over 14 were raped, some in front of their own parents, during the war that we chose to ignore even though it was an ethnic cleansing), sending doctors to do surgery to save lives etc... BUT I do NOT support sending guns, bullets, bombs, tanks, males age 18-24, to other countries.
