Boycott!!!

Boycott!!!

Hi girls. I know this is unrealistic, but........ I was thinking of not buying any clothes unless they were ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!

I think 8.75% sales tax they put back on clothing is just ridiculous and it has to be stopped! Maybe if we stop shopping and the economy goes even further down hill the gov't will WAKE UP!

So I was thinking of boycotting all the stores!

Anyone wanna join me??

I went shopping yesterday and was I ****ed!!!

I am even thinking about not going out any more for dinner! You don't pay sales tax when you buy food, do you???

Any comments?

Re: Boycott!!!

The sales tax comes to 8.63% not 8.75%. Not like to makes a difference or not.

Re: Boycott!!!

I think it's terrible that they snuck sales tax back in without really making it public first. It was out there, but hardly anyone knew.

I think you pay tax on food that is prepared already like if you buy a chicken from Boston Market or if you go out to dinner, and don't pay tax on food that is not prepared, like vegetables, pasta in a box, etc. It's a good possibility I don't have this right, but I think that is the way it works.

Re: Boycott!!!

i think you pay tax at a resturant, its prepared food which is taxable i believe!

Re: Boycott!!!

You do pay tax at restarants. Remember, double the tax and add a little for tip?

Re: Boycott!!!

If you buy clothes online you very often avoid sales tax-that's what I do!
OR make trips to jersey!

Re: Boycott!!!

DH and I go to New Hampshire a lot and often buy things there because there is no sales tax on anything except hotel rooms and restaurant meals. We bought a new vacuum cleaner at Sears when we were in NH about a month ago and we saved over $20.00.

I wish I could boycott buying anything in NY!!!

Re: Boycott!!!

Nope, I'll pay the sales tax. Besides, the state needs the money....I'd like them to keep the cops and firefighters.

How could I give up shopping right before the honeymoon?

Re: Boycott!!!

Come down to Maryland to shop. Sales tax is only 5%. I was tipping very low for about two years until I realized the tax differential

Re: Boycott!!!

I realized it big time in my store yesterday. it's double from what it was. it went from 4.5% to 8.75%
Total BS!!!! They need to make up their minds! Can't keep jumping back and forth, lowering it and raising it!

Re: Boycott!!!

I bought something on Sunday and was so annoyed to see the tax was brought back. That is so unfair. That's like giving a present and taking it back. I don't know if the state really needs it. I think they need to cut the executive level salaries they pay everywhere.

Re: Boycott!!!

I don't know, my reciept said 8.75% not 8.63%.

Shopping online is not a good option for me, I have to try on. Oh well, I guess like I said, no more crazy shopping sprees for me. I am just buying myself and DH what is absolutely necessary and try to get by with that for a while.

I WILL SHOW THEM!!!!!

I know its bad but its not as bad as being in Europe. The last time I was in France they were charging 18%!!!! I still went shopping anyway.

Re: Boycott!!!

I think boycotting the stores is just going to hurt the NY economy more.

Re: Boycott!!!

The new tax is unfair and ridiculous. With all the money we already pay for property taxes and income taxes...heck how many more taxes should we pay?

Re: Boycott!!!

If I felt that we were getting services for all the taxes that we pay it might be different. Every single thing that we buy or use has some sort of tax on it. DH and my cell phone bill is $12.00 higher per month with all the additional taxes that are included. It is ridiculous. Add to that the taxes that are charged on our other utility bills and we could easily save hundreds of dollars per year. Not to mention the taxes on gas which we on LI use more of because we don't have reliable public transportation. Nassau County has a bus system but there is not a single bus that comes anywhere near my town. Yet my taxes pay for it. The roads here are full of potholes, the garbagemen leave your garbage cans in the middle of the road and dump half your garbage in the curb and for this we pay some of the highest taxes in the country. Arghhhh. I could rant and rave over this for hours. DH has 9 years to go til his pension kicks in and then we are outta here!!!
