Girls, I need some help. I'm brand new to this whole thing and am the first one out of my freinds to get married. How soon ahead do you normally have to book a reception hall? We're planning on getting married in September and I know that's a very popular month, when should me and my future FH really start looking?

Welcome to the board and congrats on your engagement!
From what I have learned, being a June bride, it's best to book early if you have the down payment too - or at least start looking at halls. We booked our hall last month (we were engaged 12/23/05) and most of June was already booked in 2007.
So just check with reception halls to make sure your date that you want is available...look around too to make sure you know what you want...

Welcome!! You should start looking for a reception hall as soon as possible! This way you will get the place and date you want. Same with the other vendors- I did mine early and got them out of the way- almost all of them before the 1 year mark, which was nice, because I didn't have to worry about much after that... well until now.

For me, the reception site was the most important thing to get done first. You really can't make any other plans until you have your date at your hall! Good luck!

If you want to get married this fall - look to book now!!! I had started looking back in Feb '05 for Sept. ' 06 and some of the days were already completely booked. There are lots of expos going on for you to see the vendors and the hall and taste the food - call around to the different places and they will let you know when things are scheduled. You can always go in before hand to check it out and then go back for the expo. We did this.

If you want to get married September 06, you need to get a move on - and fast - for a reception hall. If you're looking for September 07, you have some time, but I wouldn't dilly dally about it. We booked our hall in August 05 for October 06 wedding.

wanna hear something scary?? we are getting married same month as you, same year-- a day after actually!! but what shocked us is when we went to book our hall (early just because we knew that was the place and we are having a long engagement) and they already had a few dates taken!! Mind you this was this past October-- TWO years in advance!!!! I couldn't believe it! so if you know the place might as well go for it and book it so that you make sure you get the date you want.. as long as you are positive like we were that the hall is right! good luck

I agree, get the hall out of the way and everything else will come together. I was going to wait also, but did not want to be stuck without having the date or around the date I wanted.

September is one of the busiest months of the year for weddings so you should def start looking at reception halls ASAP. You can narrow a lot of places down by figuring how much space you'll need, price per plate, and things like that. Once you have a list then you go visit the different halls and decide which you like best.

I agree. A friend of mine got engaged a few months ago and just booked her hall and she booked for the same weekend you are looking at. The sooner the better I say. Because this way you can stretch out the payments and it won't hurt as bad! Also, you get the cream of the crop as far as vendors and dont get stuck with whoever is left over.
