Brazil for Honeymoon????

Hi Ladies, I really need input here. I had my heart originally set on going to South Africa for my honeymoon but after ALOT of research it is just economically not doable. My FI and I were reading a Bride magazine yesterday and we came across a great deal to Brazil. 7 days at the Marriot 6 star hotel on the Copacabana beach!!!!!!! Right in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. With airfare from NY..........$2000 for the both of us!!!!!!!! What do you think and has anyone been there???? Suggestions good AND bad are welcome. I'm a big girl, I can handle it, hahahaha

Thanks!!!

Re: Brazil for Honeymoon????

A freind of mine recently went with her Graduate School class. She had a great time. As far as the danger, she said Brazil is like anywhere else, you need to be careful of where you go. She said that the tourist areas are realtively safe. One comment that she made was that the women are beautiful. She specifically said that she would not want her husband looking at all those beautiful half naked women!!! Ha Ha

Re: Brazil for Honeymoon????

My DH would love to go to Ipanema...he loves that song...I think its within Rio...

I hear the same things that it is a little dangerous..but so is Mexico and some Carribbean islands...I would look into Belize, Costa Rica or Margarita Island (Venezuela)

Re: Brazil for Honeymoon????

Hi Ladies,
My family is originally form Colombia and I have family in Venezuela, so I've been there and I've also been to Belize. I wanted to go to Costa Rica and was looking into that but it seemed much more expensive than Brazil. Keep the suggestions coming.......THANKS!

As far as it being dangerous, that's not too much of a concern. I've been to really dangerous countries in Latin America and everything so far (knock on wood) has been pleasent experiences.

Re: Brazil for Honeymoon????

I would LOVE to go to Brazil especially for Carnival!! The woman are beautiful! They show some of the parades in the spanish tv stations (my family is hispanic) when carnival comes around. I sit and watch and dream of one day being there! My mom's side is Ecuadorian and I know first hand when I go to Ecuador the first thing my family says is put away your jewelry, don't be so flashy for fear I may get assaulted. I went over the holidays with FH and before we left for our flight to Quito from my family's town, my grandma gave me a LONG lecture on the danger of the city. And nothing happened. Because we are smart travellers. If you go around flashing money and have things hanging out of your pockets of course someone will attack you. Just stick to the basics: stay away from dark allies, stay in well lit streets, don't look so much like a tourist (camera hanging from your neck, bookbag on your back), don't jump in an umarked cab, or take favors from strangers. This isn't just for Brazil this is for any country you travel to.
If you decide to go Have the BEST time!! Do you know portuguese?? I want to learn some day. I love the language but I hate the fact that I can understand it but can't speak it.

Re: Brazil for Honeymoon????

Hi cw0904,
I'm half Colombian and your half Ecuadorian, we're practically siters, lol!!!!!! That's cool.
I totally agree with you about being careful. That goes for EVERYWHERE. And grandma's are ALWAYS giving advice (you have to love them )
I'm also planning and paying this wedding with FI so I want to stay around that budget. Brazil has always been a dream esepecially after watching all the 'novelas' like 'El Clon', (Don't know if you know what I'm referring to). Well, thanks for the feedback.

Re: Brazil for Honeymoon????

Not only do you have my approval, but FH said that would be awesome to go on such a good deal. I think there is an island off of Brazil not sure the name of it but I heard its really nice and romantic so you don't have so much of the party scene as in Rio. BTW no I don't watch novelas b/c I can never understand why they end and don't continue on forever like the american ones. But I do think Pedro (el camoso sp?) is a cutie with his long hair!!
