Breastfeeding Pumps, Reco's

Breastfeeding Pumps, Reco's

Hi Mommies,

As some of you may know (from all my posts recently), I have begun my baby registry.

I plan on breastfeeding. How it will work out, who knows.. I would like to register for a breast pump. However, the medela's are very expensive and what if it doesn't work out for me. So I was thinking about registering for a manual pump (Avent Isis Back to Work). But then I heard that my arm will kill me, etc.

What should I do? Should I just rent a hospital pump or what?

TIA,
Denise

Im a full time SAHM and I have a Medela single electric pump. I couldnt imagine pumping it myself. I only use it MAYBE once a week but its definitly convenient and relativly inexpensive $79.

But it takes twice as long because its only a single right?

I plan on staying home at least 6 months, if not indefinitely.

I would like to pump only when i needed to, but who knows how it will work out.

I dont know if I would say 2x as long. When I go out now I feed Jeremy on one side and pump the other. I didnt see the need for a double pump since Im 99% home with him and I dont use the pump very often.

I ordered from the above website....quick ship, great price. The pump in style lets you adjust the suction and cycle. I have used it a few times so far...works well... I end up feeding and pumping at the same time to help build up stock in the fridge so we can go out for a few hours here and there and not have to worry about feeding time :)

Feeding and pumping at the same time, I didn't know that was possible!!

Sure - Youd be surprised what you are going to be able to do once you have a baby

I usually feed him then go in another room and pump (Emma doesnt like what Im doing, she thinks it hurts)

Oh so you pump and feed, but not at the same time, but feed from one breast and pump from the other right after.

Is this the only pump you ever used??

It does sound like a good option for me!

I HATED the Advent Isis. It was awful IMO. Plus your hand will kill you.

The pump you need depends on how often you need to pump and why you pump. A working mom needs a high qualitydouble electric pump to maintain her milk supply. A once in a while pumping mom can use the Medela electric pump.

editted to add: A hospital grade pump is 100% needed if you are having medical issues such as low supply or latching problems.

From what the people at Medela told me everyone is different. Some people have better luck with pumps then others. I used the First Years electric pump for the first 3 months while I was still at home with Kiera and I got incredible results. Then when I went back to work I couldn't get as much so I went out and spent over $300 on the Medela pump in style advance. I have not been able to get more milk out from it and it takes me the same amount of time as my First Years pump. I don't like the double pumping feature on the Medela. If you use it you have no free hands to work the controls, or tend to a baby.

I highly suggest you get an electric one and I would start off with a cheaper one.

I registered and received from my grandmother the medela pump in style..... yes, it was expensive, but I know when I have another child, I will use it again. If you do receive it, just don't open it until you know for sure that breastfeeding is working for you.... that way I think you should be able to return it. I have to say, I really thought it was GREAT! I had a handheld that the hospital had given me and I could not get the hang of it. Pumping with the pump in style went very quickly and easily. I would recommend it, but I understand you are hesitant because of the money. I still think it's worth it though.

If you get yourself a $30 hands free bra you can double pump AND still have both hands free. It was a life saver for me.

And again, ordering online is $100 less than retail store purchases for the pumps.
