breastfeeding question

Has anyone successfully stopped bf'ing and pumping during the day to only bf at night? I am returning to work soon and didn't even realize that I could do this.

It will be a slow process, you have to slowly wean the baby off of your breast and onto formula. You have to naturally decrease your supply and if the baby is not drinking from you your supply will eventually diminish. It is very important to do it slowly since it can be VERY painful to stop all at once. You will get so engorged you'll want to cut your BB's off!! I kid you not, I did it with my 1st born and had to be in bed for 2 days, it was torture, it felt better after my milk dried up, but OUCH! Start by stopping the morning feed and subtitute with a bottle, and then in a few days substitute 2 feedings, few dayslater do 3 feedings of formula.etc, etc, eventually the supply will be so low you can stop all together. It should porbably take you about 2 weeks.
It;s alos important for the baby since you want to make sure that formula will be tolerated and if worse case scenario you will still have a milk supply that can be increased if needed, once it is totally gone there is no getting it back, but if you have a samll supply, you can always work it back up again. Good luck!

Re: breastfeeding question

For the last week I have only BF Kiera for the first feeding of the day and then after 5:30. I have not pumped during the day. I am giving her breast milk in bottles during the day. I am able to pump enough in the morning and at night to keep up with her. The first couple of days I was a little uncomfortable but not in pain. Now my milk has slowed down during the day but I do not have any problems at night with supply. She's fine with it and doesn't seem to have any problems switching from the bottle to the breast.

There is a wonderful book...working mother/nursing mother. You might want to read it. It really helped me A LOT.
Do not just stop all of a sudden one day..you risk infections as well as killing your supply. Is there a reason that you feel you cannot pump at all during the day? I know it might seem impossible but it really can work out with a bit of planning.
