breastfeeding/leaking question

breastfeeding/leaking question

this isn't for me. clearly - lord knows I don't have a leaking problem!

My girlfriend has a 3 week old she is breastfeeding. She wants to start taking him out to the mall, etc, but every time she feeds him she has to put a bottle underneath her other breast to catch the leaking milk. Sometimes she leaks 2 oz!! LEAKS! No expressing! She says (I havent seen it) that it just comes out like a faucet has been turned on, and that it's too heavy for a breastpad to contain it.

Are there any products made for this that are a little more discreet than a bottle? Like something that covers te breast and catches the milk or something?

ETA: it kind of bothers me that the specialists all tell you that we all produce the same amount of milk. I really don't think its true. And I know that 'size doesn't matter' but clearly some of us are better milk producers than others, don't you think?

This happens to me a lot, but only my right breast, it's weird.

I just bring extra breastpads and stick another when the first gets full. It is a pain and it doesn't always happen.

So sometimes I forget and then I'm soaking wet on one side

I never had this happen to me so I don't know if this will work. How about a breastmilk storage bag? It is less bulky then a bottle so it may be more discreet.

leaks 2oz
BM storage bag is a great idea, except it soft so it might be hard to work with while feeding the baby. Tell her to go on the bfing chatroom at Yahoo. There are hundreds of bfing moms on that. Maybe one of them had the same problem.
We do not all produce the same amount of milk. I have never even heard that Jenny.

michele leaks 2 oz is what she SAYS - again, I haven't seen it and when I do you can bet I'll be measuring it!!!!

It's great for her and her baby is like constantly satisfied. Must be an awesome feeling.

It was the lactation consultant in the hospital that said - you'll make milk, everybody makes milk and if you dont' give up you will make just as much as everybody else, but it's a hard road blah blah. She was one of the la leches that make you feel terrible about not producing or Lord forbid entertaining formula. But she's wrong and I feel like calling her and telling her! Not everybody makes a lot!!!

Re: breastfeeding/leaking question

Jenny ... my LC consultant had suggested to me that pumping for a few minutes before nursing (if possible) may help with the flow of the milk. I know for myself that if I was leaking that much milk ... I'd want to be storing it! It'd be great to have that milk in the freezer for later on.

On the subject of making milk ... I don't know about everyone making the same amount of milk ... but your body should be responding to the baby's need for milk. At first its hard to regulate, but it does even out. I know that now I can almost predict when I'll be more full depending on how Maria's been nursing. Anyway, It definitely can't all be the same, b/c not every baby needs the same. Some need more than others.

Good luck to your friend ... if she's looking for a good online group for breastfeeding mom's ... please let me know ... my support group is online & would be more than happy to help out if need be!
