Bridal Opinion...looking back...what would you have saved money on?

Original post by lyssamkay

Good afternoon Brides,

This is a question that is for everyone: those who are engaged and those who are married!

Looking back, what was the biggest waste of money?

I am in the process of getting my budget in order and I want to know how to cut corners without sacrificing my wedding day.

Thank you so much!

I definitely did NOT need to have lavendar rice thrown at us after the ceremony. That was really dumb. It was expensive, got all caught in my hair, I found it in my bed the next morning even!! And it was expensive!

CappyGirl, I am so sorry you had a bad experience with lavender rice! But this is great information, thank you!

I'd have to say limos. DH had to have a Bentley for us and the drive from church to the RH was only about 20-30 minutes, so I wish I would've held my ground and just got a less expensive limo for us.

Thank you StaceyWill, I haven't booked limos yet, but this is great to keep in mind!

AngnShaun, thank you! I didn't even think of that!

I would have saved the money on the invites and stamps and done either a FB event or Evite...

Thank you AngnShaun, I am a big fan of Evites! I really appreciate your response! Your pictures are beautiful!

Thanks!!

Re: Bridal Opinion...looking back...what would you have saved money on?

Definitely the little things, don't get wrapped up in what everyone else is doing, I could have easily saved $1k by not doing bathroom baskets, OOT bags, favors, RD invites/favors, expensive shoes ( no one sees them) table numbers, menus, custom escort cards, wish cards, etc. I even ordered a custom flower girl basket and headband to go with our damask theme.

Granted all this stuff looked really nice and I loved it but its not a 'must have' if you are looking for ways to save.

Also, some things that are completely worth it was the candy buffet (huge hit!), band, DH had to have the bentley for a limo and I'm so happy we spurlged bc he was just on cloud nine in that limo talking with our driver about all the gadgets, but then again DH restores cars and races them so this was his must have. Lastly, my flowers, I spent a lot of money on flowers but imo they were completely worth it and really set the tone for our reception room.

HTH!

Chocolate Fountain. Everyone was toooooooo stuffed to have it.

I have to say my garter too. I spent a pretty penny on it and never even got a picture of me wearing it. We didn't do a garter toss either so i guess I just got caught in a Wedding Fever moment

Lsorrent, What is a slipper basket?
Thank you for your response!

I bought 100 pair of chinese slippers so women could change into if their heels started to hurt. They really were a hit and I did it because bare feet on a dance floor is my BIGGEST PET PEEVE, lol.

I need to do that. sounds like the best idea ever lol. I can see all my friends wearing very cute heels but after an hour those things will kill your feet. I already know I am wearing heels then changing into something flat and cute to dance in.

AngnShaun, what is an RD invitation?

Rehearsal Dinner invitation...

I put regrets only, and no one called to say they werent coming... so I had a lot of extra food, assuming that everyone was coming when at least 12 people didnt show.

that is so rude of people. it's like if you aren't going call/text/email something. I had a birthday party one year out in the hamptons which my dad luckily catered and about 6 people didn't show. it was a small party so that made a big difference. we had so much leftover wasted food that my dad had cooked and paid for. it wasn't that bad but if I had hired a caterer like I wanted I would have wasted so much $$$

years later anytime my dad caters a party of mine he asks at least 30 times who is coming. to the point we now wait until everyone shows up and just order pizza lol. I just can't stand people who do that especially with all the technology nowadays.

I am sorry you never got to do the garter, Alyssa79, but thank you for the advice!

if you arent super picky about invitations you can definitely save $$$ there

cuz remember, its not just the pricey invite...its also the postage!!

you are better off with something simple, out of a book, that will only cost $0.44 cents to mail!

Thank you little j. I was very into pocket invitations, but I was told that a square envelope costs more, so I am rethinking what I had initially chosen! This is great advice, thank you!

Re: Bridal Opinion...looking back...what would you have saved money on?

hmm it isn't really saving $$$ but

I regret some of the things I put on my registry.

After we moved into our apt we realized that things we thought we would 'need' or 'would be cool to have' were just a waste and felt bad b/c our closest friends and family had bought them for us, ya know?

So my advice is to be realistic with your registry (don't listen to the store clerks who will tell you to just add things and then return them)

because although I did do that, I felt kinda bad that someone special to us bought this for DH & I to enjoy in our home and we didn't use it.

This is great advice, AugustBridein09. What did the stores push on you that you found later on to be unnecessary?

Re: Bridal Opinion...looking back...what would you have saved money on?

I only registered at Bed Bath & Beyond and although the woman who helped us was SUPER friendly and helpful (and bought us dinner) she was also telling us to reigster for like double sets of everything and stuff to entertain.

I had 32 PAGES of registry stuff and I came home and deleted half and STILL have some stuff where I'm like 'Why do I need a food processor, mini chop, magic bullet, and 2 slap chops? and I don't even cook' LOL

oh and my bath set----We registered for a really nice one that came with the toothbrush holder, lotion dispenser, and soap thing.

When we got our apt.....the soap thing and toothbrush holder were permanent fixtures in the bathroom....so those were a waste too.

That is great advice. I didn't even think about permanent fixtures! This is a bit of a personal question, but did some people give you gift cards instead of gifts for your shower? If you don't feel comfortable answering this, I completely understand.

Thank you for your response AugustBridein09!
