bridal show warning

bridal show warning

FH and I have been going to a ton of bridal shows recently. At each bridal show they make us fill out this blue card so that you have a chance to win something. A couple days ago we got a phone call from 21st century saying that we won a contest from one of the cards we filled out at the show. They said we won a $500 gift card to an online company, a three day, two night vacation to one of 15 places we choose, and %40 off this cookware stuff.

So FH and I went to the Hampton inn today to pick up our prize, however, the catch was we had to sit through this 90 min presentation about this royal prestige cookware. Let me tell you the presentation was impressive, he cooked in front of us, and showed us how horrible other cookeware is and how it can flake off into your food. Even aluminum pans can cause health problems. Plus if we bought their product today we would get a five day, four night vacation to Cancun, all inclusive!

So, after 90 minutes he said that the %40 off was only good for today. Now this cookware was very expensive, With the discount it would cost $1800, but if it was really that good then maybe it would be worth it. Plus we could use the Cancun trip as part of our honeymoon. FH and I stood around with the other couples and thought about it. Two couples left and us and one other couple stuck around and ended up buying it. When we got home we went online and looked up the product we bought. It apparently has gotten some pretty bad reviews! Plus, I feel like we payed more for the trip to cancun than the cookware. FH and I looked over the contract and signed the back saying to cancel the order. But I am still nervous and I hope it all goes through in the three business days we have to cancel it. We're doing it certified mail so they ahve to sign that they got it.

On top of that the online website with the $500 gift card had crap. Nothing worth buying at all.

So, if any of you get a phone call like this saying you won something from a bridal show, I wouldn't go. It's a big scam! I don't know what we were thinking, it's so easy to get sucked into these things.

There was a long post about this maybe like a month ago, sounds like a scam, keep on top of it.

i have gotten a bunch of calls like that over the past few months. lucky for me it seems, that FH put his foot down and said he didn't want to go - he swore it'd end up being a scam! sounds like he's right!

I know exactly what you are talking about!! FH and I fell for it to and went but thank god we didn't buy the pots. After I went home and googled it I found alot of complaints about the product, the sales people and the return policy. These people should be ashamed of themselves!!

That is aweful. I am sorry that a company did that. It is so underhanded and unprofessional. Good luck with everything!

Re: bridal show warning

My FSIL forwarned me about the 'you've won!' phone calls. I NEVER fill out those cards....not only do they all have a catch, but they get you excited & then leave you bummed.....plus you get 9 million annoying solicitors calling you!!!

My FI and I had something similar about a year ago. I was told how I had won a trip to the Bahamas.

You might want to forward these complaints to the people who are organizing the Bridal Expos and sponsoring this 21st Century company. Is the Expo sponsored by the RH or by some outside company?

If the idea is for vendors to advertise, this hurts the legitimate advertisers (photogs, florists, limos, etc.) who have most likely paid a hefty fee to be there. Couples have no choice but to give fake contact phone #'s !

We really feel sooo stupid about what we did! We cancelled the credit card we purchased the stuff on and then we have to send in this form in three business days. Hopefully everything will work out ok. I'd rather use the money to buy flower for the wedding!!!

I always ignore those kinds of phone calls.

Re: bridal show warning

since you put it on your credit card call your credit card company right now - dont just cancel it - you have to tell them the whole story - if you are not happy with an item you purchased on your credit card you do not have to pay. . . that is why most vendors do not accept credit cards for anything past the deposit and thats why you are always supposed to buy trips on credit so you can get the money back should something go wrong

Good Luck!

Re: bridal show warning

I had gone to my first bridal show back in April and was excited when i got the phone call and said i would get all that free stuff too. I came online and asked about them and heard a lot of bad things about them. SO FH ended up not going. Last month i got another phone call from them saying i won.. now i hadnt gone to another bridal show (except for the one at Marriot Marquis) and didnt fill out any postcards other than the ones with vendors. SO she says congrats i won! I told her i hadnt been to a bridal show and i know of their scam. No phone calls since!
