(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) Stacy-Ann Sappleton traveled from Canada to New York last week, presumably to visit her future in-laws. She ended up dead, her bullet-ridden nearly nude body left in a trash bin in Queens.
The slaying of Sappleton, 26, of Tecumseh, Ontario, remained a mystery Tuesday as police searched for the killer and her family sought to cope with the loss.
'It's too difficult to speak about,' the victim's mother, Marcia Thomas, said in a brief telephone interview.
Thomas, of Toronto, followed her daughter to New York on Sunday after being told she had disappeared en route to the Queens home of her future in-laws. On Tuesday, Thomas waited at their home with hopes police would provide some answers.
'We haven't heard anything,' she said. 'They're just following leads.'
The mother said her daughter never mentioned she would be visiting New York. But her fiance, Damian Blair, and his parents have told police that on Friday the victim flew from Detroit, near Tecumseh, to La Guardia Airport; she caught a cab and spoke to the fiance on a cell phone to get directions to his family's home.
The future in-laws said the phone call was the last time anyone heard from Sappleton. But police, after locating and interviewing the cab driver on Tuesday, eliminated him as a suspect and now believe she made it at least as far as the front door of the in-laws' home.
Police also confirmed that the fiance was in Canada at the time of Sappleton's disappearance. There was no evidence she was the victim of a sexual assault, they added.
The future in-laws reported the woman missing on Saturday and circulated fliers with her photo. The fliers said she was last seen wearing blue pants, a blue long-sleeve top, a jeans jacket and a gray vest.
A sanitation worker found the body of a young woman matching Sappleton's description after dumping a load of trash Monday, police said. The woman was wearing only underwear and it appeared that she had been dead less than 24 hours, said Inspector Kathleen Kearns of Queens South Detective Bureau.
An autopsy performed Tuesday found that Sappleton died from gunshot wounds to her neck, torso and limbs.
