Hi, I have a 7y/o daughter. I am worrying about how she will react to us, FH and I, going on a HM. How are you all dealing/ or dealt with this? Did you tell them after thewedding or before? I am thinking of telling her the next day, before we leave, otherwise she is going to be dreading it through the whole wedding. Any help would be appreciated.

i wouldn't wait till just before you leave to tell her.... i think that might upset her more- i think kids need time to like mentally prepare themselves for stuff like that... who is she staying with while your away? i would just put a positive spin on that- like ' oh you get to spend a whole week with grandmom, and shes gonna take you for ice cream and pizza' or whatever... maybe have whoever is watching her plan a couple fun things for the week to get your daughter excited about... or keep the thigns a surprise and say ' grandmom has a couple surprises for you while your'e staying with her...'

I totally agree with Melissa. My son had no problem with it because he knew about the HM from the get-go. Thought it was all part of the 'wedding process'. I would tell her now and definetly make it appealing and as if she's going on a trip too 'ooohhhh..you are gonna have such a great time at Nana's house!! Lucky,Lucky you! What do you want to take for your trip to Nana's house??? ' You get the idea.

My FH and I have 8 kids between us, so we understand these issues.... who will she be staying with while you are away? Our youngest of the bunch is 7 - he had no problem with us going away... we have also planned a family vacation this summer with everyone.. so we told them about that as well... Allyson

agree with the suggestions above... you can also tell her that you and FH will bring her something speical back from your HM location with the condition that she not be difficult prior to the wedding. Maybe even let her pick what she wants?
That being said, you know your daughter best. I generally think that you should tell her before and that not telling her until you leave isn't a great thing and may make it even harder for the person who is watching her while you're gone. BUT - if you are thinkign of doign that based on past behavior or something else we don't have insight on, then go with your gut. Mommy's know their kids best!

FH, who is her father, thinks we should tell her before the wedding as well. I just don't want her to be miserable through the wedding, dreading it. She'll be staying with my mom and grandma and FH's sister and husband. I will also be asking friends to maybe take her to Friendly's or such a couple of times to occupy her time. This is the hardest part for me.

I don't have any kids, but I can tell you from personal experience, I hated when my parents kept things from me 'to spare my feelings.' I would have preferred it much more if they just came out and told me things well in advance. It just put me in panic mode when I found out things right then and there and didn't have time to prepare for them. HTH

Danielle- As you know, I don't have kids, but I don't know if its the best idea to wait until right before you leave to tell her - she might get angry with you for not telling her.
I think she is old enough to understand that a honeymoon is part of a wedding. Tell her that you and dad are going to spend some time alone after the wedding, and you will go with her on another trip later. Next time you go on a trip after the HM, tell her that its a wedding trip for the three of you.
Travis and I will do something fun with her! Maybe we could take her to Great Adventure or something that weekend.

Thanks Lau, I know it's best to tell her before. I guess I am just worried about her constantly thinking about it before hand and being sad. I might take you up on your offer. Thank you so much!

See Danielle, you have nothing to worry about,Lauren is offering her services... what a good friend. She's even taken it upon herself to organize this LIW's GTG for the kids...how sweet. Lauren, you could pick-up my son at Ally's house..it'll be easier that way for you, since she has 8! Have fun..I'm sure there are other moms here that would be glad to ship there kids off to your GTG... could you imagine?

has she never spent the night away from you before??? maybe you can arrange a sleep over for her at grandma's before so she can get used to it... my brother and i would spend the weekend at my grandparents house all the time, it was just something we were used to... when i was 5 my parents went to England and wanted to take me, i begged to go to grandma's house instead! stupid me!
