These poor animals deserve better. I would LOVE to treat these evil people the way they treat these animals. This is where Hammurabi was right- eye for an eye!! SICKOS!!!!!!

Re: Brides, we MUST do something about Puppy Mills

I know....I want to watch it as well. I bought one of my Yorkies at Shake-A-Paw in Lynbrook and it was the biggest mistake of my life. He has a hereditary liver disease and almost died as a puppy. Fortunately, I noticed he wasn't well right away and took him to the best vets on Long Island. Almost $8k later, he is not cured, he never will be, but he is alive, happy and as healthy as he can be.

When he got sick, I wrote to the news channels, attorney general, better business bureau, every place you could think of. I even took Shake-A-Paw to small claims court. I wrote to a ton of animal rights places. A few months ago a woman from a pet protection agency who fights against puppy mills called me regarding my dog and told me my dogs birth certificate and everything was false. That the breeder on his certificate hasnt bred dogs in 10 yrs. It actually a whole international scheme where dogs are bred in Cuba, sent to Hungary and than brought to the U.S. Half the time they die in transport; while other wind up incredibly sick like my dog.

I think this news story is based on the investigation she was doing recently. I will have to watch and see.

NEVER BUY A DOG FROM SHAKE-A-PAW!!!! THEY HAVE A TON OF SMALL CLAIMS SUITS AGAINST THEM AND SELL SICK DOGS. THEY SHOULDNT EVEN BE IN BUSINESS.

i agree...it's horrible isn't it? i'm a member of ASPCA...but i wish i could go in and save each and every one of those poor animals!!

what ***** is the pet shops buy these puppy mill dogs and sell them at ridiculious rates to people. that is why i will never buy a dog at a pet shop...only at a humane society or animal shelter. (that's one way to help...boycott people who purchase and help fund the mills!)

Trust me I had no intention of buying a dog from a pet store, but when I walked in and saw him I fell in love. I couldnt resist. And your right, it is a good thing he had me b/c anybody else would have put him to sleep. He required a ton of medical care and a special diet but over all is he ok. He is the sweetest, mushiest dog ever and I couldnt imagine him not being around.

Here is a picture of Rocky:

That is EXACTLY what happened w/ Luca. I went in to look and couldnt even afford a $1200 dog. But his eyes were SOOOO sad and I had to have him. He and FI are the most important things in my life (except my health).
I too am a member of ASPCA and PETA and Humane Society

ps- your dog is so sweet

I am not saying that puppy mills or pet stores are justified in any way to treat animals the way they do - it is a horrific practice that obviously goes unpunished. BUT don't those animals have the right to exist in dignity in a loving home if SOMEONE just BUYS them instead of leaving them there to be subject to further abuse? If I were permitted to have a dog, I'd rather save one if I could. But then again i dont know enough about it. Just a thought.

i totally agree that the animals have a right to live in a loving home. the problem is that puppy mills keep the dogs in horrible filthy conditions, tiny spaces barely able to move around. they mate the adults, and they spend their pregnancy in a space so small that you would feel bad putting your shoes in! then they're puppies are sold to pet stores (many of which KNOW where they are coming from). alot of times there is soooo much in-breeding (moms mating with sons, brothers and sisters mating), so that way someone can be $1000 for a pure breed maltese or whatever, and when you in-breed these animals a lot of genetic diseases are created and passed down. muscular disease (because the DNA of the animals is not changing), heart conditions, liver, etc. etc.

the point is that these animals are being bred for $$, and they many times wind up very sick and must be put down, but the puppy mills still continue to earn money and keep breeding them in this horriffic conditions. what the ASPCA wants is to just end puppy mills altogether so that these animals aren't being brought into the world with 3 strikes against them already.

I bought fred from a pet store for that reason. I didnt intend to but I just couldnt leave him there. He was sick and I knew he would have been left there and not bought had I not taken him in. He has cost me thousands.. but I love him just the same.

one more thing...since others posted their pups...i have to now too!

this is Juju..my adorable Jack Russell Terrier mix (bit of a mutt!)...got him from North Shore Animal League. He was rescued from an abusive home, and suffered injuries to his back from being beaten. Just look at that cutie! Who could hurt him?! He's the best dog I could have asked for, and we spoil him rotten!

when i got my dog from a pet store the very next day he was so sick and we had to make several trips to the vet and leave him overnight. i cried all night when he was at the vet and then stayed up with him every night for about 5 days while he got better. now 5 years later he still sometimes has some issues stomach wise, but i can't imagine life without him.

He is AMAZINGLY gorgeous. There should be no law for murder against people who abuse animals. I wish they would all die!!!

I go to the 'Puppy Depot' sometimes, just because I love looking at puppies. Some of the puppies are just so ill. It breaks my heart, I wish I could take them all and make them better.

i don't mean to offend/insult anyone, but the truth of the matter is when you buy a puppy in a pet store, you're actually indirectly supporting the mills because the store is gaining profits, and will just go out and replace that dog you purchased with another one from a mill, thereby supporting the mill.

If you would like to give your loving home to a dog that would otherwise die, there are many at your local animal shelter. In fact, animal shelters see a surge in puppies after the christimas holidays because many people dump puppies that they received as Xmas gifts at animal shelters upon discovering that the puppies require more time & care than they initially expected.

For more information:

http://www.stoppuppymills.org/

In particular, taken from the website:

Don’t support puppy mills. Puppy mill dogs are sold even in the swankiest of pet stores and through the most picturesque of web sites. The truth is, unless you personally visit the place where your dog is born and raised, you have no real way of knowing whether you’re supporting a puppy mill. Puppy millers have devised slick new methods for hiding their cruel businesses. They regularly place newspaper ads that hawk one specific breed (instead of the old approach of exclaiming, “We have over 20 different breeds!”) to fool consumers into thinking the mill is actually a small operation. Rule No.1 is always: Never buy a puppy without personally visiting the breeder’s premises. Read our “Five Easy Steps to Avoid a Puppy Mill” for more information.
