I go to the 'Puppy Depot' sometimes, just because I love looking at puppies. Some of the puppies are just so ill. It breaks my heart, I wish I could take them all and make them better.
You can write to report this. I will FM you the form

i don't mean to offend/insult anyone, but the truth of the matter is when you buy a puppy in a pet store, you're actually indirectly supporting the mills because the store is gaining profits, and will just go out and replace that dog you purchased with another one from a mill, thereby supporting the mill.
If you would like to give your loving home to a dog that would otherwise die, there are many at your local animal shelter. In fact, animal shelters see a surge in puppies after the christimas holidays because many people dump puppies that they received as Xmas gifts at animal shelters upon discovering that the puppies require more time & care than they initially expected.

In particular, taken from the website:
Don’t support puppy mills. Puppy mill dogs are sold even in the swankiest of pet stores and through the most picturesque of web sites. The truth is, unless you personally visit the place where your dog is born and raised, you have no real way of knowing whether you’re supporting a puppy mill. Puppy millers have devised slick new methods for hiding their cruel businesses. They regularly place newspaper ads that hawk one specific breed (instead of the old approach of exclaiming, “We have over 20 different breeds!”) to fool consumers into thinking the mill is actually a small operation. Rule No.1 is always: Never buy a puppy without personally visiting the breeder’s premises. Read our “Five Easy Steps to Avoid a Puppy Mill” for more information.
YES!!!!!!! You go!!!!!

I don't own a dog, but I do own a cat who we adopted from Bide-A-Wee in Wantagh. I had worked at the Manhattan location years ago, so I know that they treat their animals humanely and will keep all animals until they are adopted. They also have vets on premises and a clinic. This is one of the reasons I went there for my cat.
Our cat came from an abused home, and is still skittish and does not like to be picked up because of the abuse she endured. I don't know the specifics, but I never asked. She was in Bide-A-Wee for 2 years before we adopted her. She is a happy, healthy 6 year old cat.
They are a great place to adopt pets (they have plenty of dogs and cats) if you are looking to stay away from the possibility of supporting puppy mills. I know I was raised to love all animals, we had many growing up. No animal deserves to be in the conditions those at those mills are being subjected to.

Amen to that. Seriously. While I totally understand walking into a petstore and seeing an adorable pet who needs love and just buying it on impulse, it's really just a horrible idea... after all, the less people buy dogs from pet stores, the less able puppy mills will be to make money. I'm personally a rabbit person, and I have many times been sorely tempted to buy a rabbit I see in a petstore, especially because I know that there's a really good chance that rabbit won't have a very bright future, but I will never do so. There are thousands upon thousands of animals in shelters who actually will be put to death if not adopted (as opposed to a puppy in a petstore who might just get sick). These are completely healthy and wonderful animals who get put to sleep purely because there are just too many strays and not enough room for them.
All of my pets, both my own and my parents' (I'm living with them right now) are either shelter babies or come straight from a reputable breeder, with paperwork, and with meeting the mama and the whole litter. I don't plan on ever buying an animal... pretty much any animal you want can be found in a shelter if you look hard enough. My two rabbits are shelter babies, and even one of my turtles is from a rescue!
There are so many animals out there who desperately need loving homes. It upsets me so much to see them languish in shelters, or even worse, be put down because they've been in the shelter for two weeks and nobody has adopted them yet.
And for those who are horrified: Do something! Don't support petstores that support puppy mills - buy your pet supplies only from petstores that don't sell dogs. Buy from locally owned petstores instead of corporate ones like PetCo or PetSmart. And get out there and volunteer whatever you have to help shelter animals - time, money, whatever. There are shelters and rescues for all kinds of animals all up and down Long Island. Sometimes it's as simple as hanging out in a petstore and when people start cooing over the animals engaging them in a friendly conversation and maybe quietly (and not militantly!) opening their eyes to other options.

The only way to stop puppy mills is to NEVER EVER buy a puppy from a pet store. Don't even go into those stores, that way you won't be tempted to buy one. There are so many adorable dogs and cats who need homes that are in not-for-profit shelters. If you absolutely have to have a purebred, then please go to a reputable breeder. I have known about puppy mills for many many years and am always telling people not to get puppies from pet stores. If no one bought from these evil stores, then puppy mills would be out of business. I urge you all again to NEVER NEVER EVER buy a puppy from a pet store. DO NOT even go into these stores and give them your time of day!!

I was going to say the same thing, but I guess I can repeat...
There is no reason to buy a dog! There are so many sweet little dogs waiting for homes at shelters - and so many reputable shelters out there that treat their animals like gold!
Don't go to those pet stores - its depressing and you are only supporting those hellish puppy mills!!!

DH was a cruelty investigator for the ASPCA back in the 90s. He eventually had to quit because of the things he saw--it was too upsetting.
His first beagle was a former puppy mill mother. There is no way to know how many litters of dogs she gave birth do. When DH found her (during a raid), she was in the back yard of this man's property. She fed only stale bagels and had no shelter (she was too old to breed, so she was of no use).
DH brought her home, and the diseases and injuries she sustained would shock you. He got her to the vet, and took care of all her medical needs. She ended up living with him for almost eight years. And she was the sweetest, kindest animal you've ever meet, which is surprising considering the hell she was put through. She had to be put asleep in 1999 after almost 18 years of life.
We now have another beagle (which was a rescue) and 10 (yes, 10) cats -- all of whom are feral or kittens of feral mothers. We would never buy an animal from a pet store, especially when there are so many available from shelters. Many of the shelters have extensive screening processes, but they only do that to make sure the person reallly wants the animal--that they won't dump it at the first sign of trouble. Sure, it is a pain in the butt, but people have to realize they are taking responsibility for another living creature.
Please, inform yourself about puppy mills. They are NOT a good thing.

I think the biggest problem is ignorance - a lot of people just don't realize that buying a dog from a pet store is supporting puppy mills because many people don't even know what a puppy mill is. It's really the most heartbreaking thing. The best thing we can do is to get the word out about puppy mills - things like the news program are so great for that.
My mother adopted a shi tzu from a co-worker who didn't have time for it. We aren't sure, but we think the co-worker bought her from a puppy mill because our dog died when she was only 5 years old from kidney disease

Its so true, if people did not buy dogs from pet stores, the puppy mills would be put out of business. It breaks me heart, a friend of mine found a yorkie the day after thanksgiving and I'm caring for him while i locate the owner or another home, my building does not allow dogs...he is soo sweet, doesnt bark at all. and is sooo affectionate. loves to nuzzle!!!

The dog you found didn't have a collar? Mine have microchips...the vet can scan it and tell you who he belongs to.
