Hi All, I have a question for any Brides who have honeymooned in Italy? Were you fluent in Italian? And if you weren't could you get around with just the basics?
Thanks!

Re: Brides who have honeymooned in Italy?
I have been to Italy many times. Especially in the large cities, it is relatively easy to get around not knowing Italian. A lot of Italians learn English in school. I also know many people who have gone to Italy and other European countries not knowing the language. They got around fine. Just bring one of those pocket guides that give you all the key phrases to say. The hotels will also have a concierge that most likely speaks English. Good luck! It is a beautiful country and the I have never eaten a bad meal when I visited

Well, we didn't honeymoon in Italy but just recently came back from a Mediterranean Cruise and stayed in Venice, Italy for 2 nights.
My husband is fluent in Italian and I'm not. When we were in Venice I was kinda suprised that they spoke a lot of English and no problems communicating at all. My husband says that the big cities do speak some English.

You won't have a problem in the bigger cities...plus English is taught in schools as a second language...worse comes to worse have a pocket dictionary...I wouldn't worry

I wouldn't worry as long as you know the basics.

Re: Brides who have honeymooned in Italy?
I had studied it in high school and college and knew a little that my grandfather taught me when I was little, but I only used it on the island of Capri. Rome and Positano had a lot of English speakers.
I personally liked to practice my Italian, but it wasn't necessary.

We are going to Italy for our honeymoon - venice, tuscany, florence and the amalfi coast - and neither one of us really know much Italian. From what I hear, we will be fine.

We are going solo. I am not worried about the language issues at all, that will be a part of our adventure! I will be bringing a phrase book with me.

Friends of mine run tours and this year's tour is to Italy - so they will be there with an English speaking guide also.

We also will be going solo...don't want to be in time constraints with the tour...plus I feel like we will miss the little towns which are so much more romantic and nicer...imo than the big cities...

I visited a more remote part of italy some years back, and I was able to get by on the so so italian that I knew. Rome - you should have no problem getting by. Many italians around that central area speak english. HAVE FUN!!!
