ok ladies the horror of bridesmaid dress shopping is going to begin in January Im def not looking forward to it. but anyway....what are your thoughts on materials. I am having an august wedding and my dress is a silk taffeta (so its lighter than satin). My girls will be in black long gowns.
Should i have them go for chiffon or satin? i have a size 0 in the wedding party as well as a size 20 (if that makes a difference). I have been told chiffon looks better on larger girls bc it doesnt cling to them...but that its not as flattering on smaller girls.
any thoughts???

i love the way satin looks
but for a BP, unless all the girls are thin, I def think chiffon.
its also lighter and more comfortable in the summer
I have a BP ranging in all sizes, I originally wanted satin but the girls thought it was too heavy and it wasn't as flattering
chiffon is so flowy and looks great on everyone and its comfy!

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
What about tissue taffeta for your girls. Lots of BM dresses come in tissue taffeta and it's a material that is flattering to everyone. Also, it is light and would be good for an August wedding.

I am biased with chiffon. I just think it looks so nice on everyone and it's so flowly.

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
i've worn satin in august and it's not terrible.
taffeta gets sticky in the heat
and chiffon clings to your body if you sweat
i'm biased - i have girls of all different sizes in my BP and i picked satin, but i picked a satin with a lot of rouching and with straps so that it would look good on everyone.

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
I am having a july wedding im using satin i have girls from size 2 to 24 and it looked good on all of them. I like chiffon but some of the girls hated it so you have to either pick yourself or ask your girls. But satin is still nice

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
I am going to say chiffon because it is lighter and not as hot a satin especially since you are doing black. Being a plus size girl myself I am sure the more flattering and lighter fabric would be much appreciated.

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
My girls are wearing Charmeuse. It's a very light satin. My girls are also all different sizes. This particular fabic is very light weight and felt very comfortable in it.

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
i love the way both of those fabrics look - but i agree, your 'curvier' BM might feel more comfortable in chiffon.
i think the largest size in my BP is a size 12 (in Bill Levkoff sizing) so the fabric wasn't really an issue.
that being said, the tops of my BM dresses are silk charmeuse and the bottoms are chiffon- pics in album

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
i was a BM in 2 summer weddings this year one with a satin dress and the other was chiffon, im a size 14 (on a good day anyway ) i actually felt i looked alot slimmer in the satin than the chiffon dress. because satin is a heavier thicker fabric it held a true a-line shape better than the chiffon so it wasnt as clingy to the hips and butt as the chiffon was. also for the record both were very hot! i dont think its possible to wear a long gown in the summer with heels and a strapless bra and spanx and all those fun undergarments and not be a little sweaty.
also i chose other because the dresses i picked for my girls are neither satin or chiffon they are jersey and in my opinion are quite flattering on my girls who are a multitide of different sizes. I have picks in my album labeled 'wedding decisions' the dresses are from Davids.

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
My gown is silk taffeta and I chose long black SATIN gowns for my July wedding. Since my silk taffeta gown is shiny, chiffon BM dresses just didn't look right next to my gown. The satin has a beautiful sheen that matches the look of my wedding dress.
There are many lighter satins out there, so I wouldn't worry about the heat. Our girls are going to be hot no matter what...it's summer!
I also have a variety of body types in my BP. I chose Dessy 2812 and all of my BMs were comfortable and looked great. It's all about the cut of the dress.
Good luck!

Re: bridesmaid dress fabric
My girls are wearing black chiffon dresses in August.
Part of the reason I chose chiffon was because I was doing black. I thought the material would make it a little lighter since black isnt typically considered a summer color. They also have pink sashes and will be holding pink flowers.
