Bridesmaid Dresses

Bridesmaid Dresses

This one may be a bit long...so sorry in advance, but I have a couple of dress related questions, and I know you fabulous brides have the best answers!
First, my wedding is in a year and four months. Is it too early to order bridesmaid dresses? I really want to book flowers but heard that you should decide on BM dresses before you choose flowers.

Second, I am loving Mori Lee and *** Solano, as they have beautiful dresses and are reasonably priced. What are some good stores to check out that have a big selection and good prices? I'm in Queens so I really don't want to have my girls travel further than like mid Nassau to get them.

Third, has anyone heard of My Daughter's Wedding in Great Neck? Any opinions?

And last but not least, do you have to get alterations done at the place where you purchase the dresses or can you go wherever you want?

Thanks in Advance!!!! I hope everyone has an AMAZING holiday and some well deserved time off!

This is really the only question I'm totally comfortable answering... lol.

We went to My Daughter's Wedding II to get my mom's MOB dress and they were wonderful! I grew up near that place and was happy to get her dress there. They were helpful, we found something in our price range (which was low!) and the alterations were quite reasonable and quick as well.

Good luck with everything!

I'm going to try and answer all of the questions, haha...

First, I don't think it's too early to start looking and trying on dresses, but I think it's a little early to order them. Since you still have a year and 4 months, there will be new styles coming out, and some styles you see now may be discontinued. You also may decide to change the whole look, colors, and whatnot in that amount of time. I'd start looking so you can get an idea of what kind of necklines, silhouettes, etc. you want, and then wait to order until like 7 months before. (We ordered our BM dresses in August and they came in a month and a half ago and are just sitting around!)

Second, I'm sure if you go on the Mori Lee and Mi a Solano websites they will give you a list of stores that carry those dresses! We got my dress and the BM dresses at RK Bridal in the city -- I'm pretty sure they had Mori Lee, but I'm not sure about the other one... They have a big selection and good prices, and also a discounted program called 'No Frills' that lowers the price even more.

Third, never heard of it, sorry!

Last, I don't think you HAVE to have alterations done at the place you buy them, but most of these stores have seamstresses that specialize and have a lot of experience altering these kinds of dresses, so it might be beneficial to stay with them. We did the no frills at RK so none of my girls are havin their dresses altered there.

HTH!

First, I don't think it's too early to look but I do think it's a little too early to order them. Styles change and new one's come out, tastes change, colors change, (bp members change ). So you might want to wait until your about 10 months away.

i can only answer for My Daughter's Wedding III - it's a nice shop with a lot of selections. the ladies there are very helpful and the owner is actually the one who does the alterations check them out and one piece of advice: don't hesitate to haggle!

i got my bm dresses from RKBridal in the city, they have a huge selection of dresses and designers. also bm dresses dont have to be altered at the place your buying them.
i don't think it makes a big difference getting the dresses or flowers 1st. just have a color set. when i went to the florist i told/showed them what i like and have in mind. you can make changes closer to the wedding.

thanks guys! I think I'm going to wait on ordering the dresses until the summer time, and just do the flowers first. I really wasn't comfortable picking out dresses now because I do realize that styles change and get discontnued all the time, I just wanted to take care of the flowers since that's a big expense. But I will definitely be checking out My Daughter's Wedding. Thanks agaiN!

Hi, just some additional thoughts that the other responses didn't touch upon. First, you can still visit florists even though you don't know the dresses yet. You're not necessarily making any decisions about which specific flowers/colors you want at your first meeting and when you book. You should like the work and the looks overall of your florist as well as their attitude. Other specifics that would include colors can come later. But even so, you still have awhile before having to book the florist.

Also, you may want to have the dress altered at the same place where you order it b/c they will also give you a good deal on the alterations. For instance, most bm alterations are capped somewhere in the $75 range. I was recently in a wedding, and took the dress for alterations elsewhere (b/c the dress place was in Staten Island and thus inconvenient), and just the HEM ALONE was $55! Also, should they mess up somewhere, they are liable b/c they purchased the dress from the designer.
