It's definitely 'unconventional' but don't let that stop you. If this person is close to you, there is no reason to have him as an usher purely because of his gender. I think it's great.
What time of day did you go for your pictures. I had wanted to do this as an option for our wedding next month but I was told since it would be dark out, it would be pointless

The bride and groom went all out...string quartet at cocktail hour, 4 hour reception, Viennese hour, AND, for all of the people who were staying the night (and those who wanted to continue to party), they had an open bar and 'mini-buffet' in the bar upstairs. We had the entire place to ourselves for the weekend! FYI, she had just over 200 people and anymore than that would have been tight.
