Bridesmaid troubles...any advice would help!

Bridesmaid troubles...any advice would help!

I hope this doesn't get too long, but i do need some advice.

One of my (supposed) best friends is a bridesmaid. She and I have always been close, but ever since I told her I was engaged almost 6 months ago, she has completey distanced herself from me. Of course I asked her to be a bridesmaid, and she said yes, but quite honestly, in 6 months we have maybe talked about the wedding 3 times.

She shows no interest in anything I have to say - when it came to choosing which BM dress I wanted, I asked her opinion to involve her but she basically ignored me. She rarely calls me and when we talk she never really asks anything about the wedding.

We did talk about this situation once - she told me that I was distancing myself (which honestly I don't see since I've been try more than ever to be in contact with her), I thought we resolved everything but now it's worse.

To make matters worse, she keeps complaining about how much it will cost her to be in my wedding. I'm getting married in Ireland - I know that flights are expensive and I told her as soon as I knew so that she (and the other girls) could get as good a deal as possible. The thing is, she can afford it - she lives at home with NO expenses and makes more than I do! If it were someone who really couldn't afford it I don't think I'd be so bothered but I KNOW she can, and if she couldn't I know for a fact that her parents would pay for it for her.

I told all the girls that if they cannot come because of expense I completely understand, but the other girls haven't backed out, complained, in fact they couldn't be more excited. What do I do? I can't take her constant complaining - it's making me feel horrible and guilty for something I can't control and I totally feel as though she is trying to ease her way out of the wedding. She hasn't even asked about hotels there or anything which really makes me think she's not planning on coming. At this point I wish I'd never asked her. If she's not going to come, I just want her to tell me now so that I don't have to stress out over it - but how do I ask her and make her give me an honest answer?

Sorry this is so long - I hope it's clear. If anyone can give any advice I'd appreciate it.

If it's this bad now...it's just gonna get worse. You shouldn't have to deal with someone bringing you down at this happy time. Just confront her and say the you are getting the feeling she doesn't really want to be in the wedding and that maybe she could reconsider her answer and that you wouldn't be insulted. Girls can be such a pain in the ***. maybe she is feeling jealous. Until i started planning a wedding, i didn't realize how much time it takes up. Maybe she truly feels like you're ignoring her?? who knows...i would just confront it. If she's really a best friend, you guys will work it out. If she's not, then you saved yourself the dissapointment she would've caused you later. True friends should be happy for you at this time in your life! good luck...let me know what happens!

That stinks! You certainly don't need that kind of stress while trying to plan a wedding in another country.

I would confront her openly and ask if she is going to come because you are making arrangements. I wouldn't assume she can pay for it just because she lives at home, people can have all kinds of expenses they never share. Are the bridesmaids going to share rooms, rental cars, or anything else to keep costs low?

I agree with the other two girls about confronting her (again) - but when you did, make it like she has an easy way out so that she can show her true feelings on it. You don't need this and if she doesn't wanna be there, she shouldn't be, and she shouldn't be bringing you down all the time about it.

Thanks for the advice ladies.

The girls are going to all share a hotel room and i'm thinking of paying for their dresses (if I can afford to - although I haven't told them this yet). I'm trying my hardest to get them all the information I can on ways they can save money on this trip and I'm really doing my best to not make them pay a lot for their dresses, accomodation, etc.

coxmandi- I didn't mean to generalize about people living at home having lots of money. But I do know for a fact that she has plenty to spare - she brags about her lack of expenses (her only bill is her car - her parents pay for the insurance, and her credit card bill). When she brags about the $350 cashmere poncho she just bought, then in the same sentence complains about at $500 plane ticket that she had 10 months to save up for, I find it very hard to believe that she is 'totally broke' and unable to get a ticket. Sorry if that sounded frustrated - my annoyance is at her, please don't think its at you!!!

She's been on again off again with this guy and I was told by a mutual friend that she said that 'its unfair that everyone has someone and I don't' - so about a week after I got engaged she got back together with this guy. Maybe she is jealous, as awful as that is to presume. But I'm supposedly her best friend - I just feel like she should be a little more supportive right now. Maybe thats just me being selfish!

my guess is that she's not happy in her relationship or maybe there is no relationship?

Well, we've all been there at some point. she is probably just unhappy that she doesn't have anyone and is lonely. again, just confront her, and remember, this happy occassion for you probably is a blatent reminder that she doesn't have anyone. It's just emotions, she probably (hopefully) will feel bad when she realizes how much she's hurting you! good luck and remember, friends aren't perfect, give her a chance to make things right!
