You should also consider having a 'Wedding Party' party. My sister had several parties starting a year before the wedding so the whole wedding party, including ushers, could get to know each other. By the time the wedding came everyone was great friends. Obviously this is often difficult when you have a lot of people in the wedding party, especially if they live in different areas, but it certainly makes everyone more comfortable with each other.
