I havent' found any bridesmaids dresses I love so I'm considering letting my 6 BMs pick their own blue dresses. Has anyone else done this? I know other people that have done this with black dresses (I'm actually in a wedding in March that the bride is doing black); however, I'm looking for the BMs to wear cobalt blue or a similar blueish color.
Can anyone post their pictures of girls wearing the same overall color but not the same dresses?

I went shopping with 3 of my BMs and they tried on lots of dresses. Then they all agreed on 1 for the MOH and 1 for the BMs. I just picked the color and had veto power. It made everyone happy, and all my girls love their dresses...which they will wear in a week!!!

One of my good friend from work was just in a wedding where all the girls wore the same color of pool blue. I'll see if I can get pics. The bride picked the color from David's Bridal and what length she wanted ( tea length) and then the girls went and ordered what they wanted. I think they all decided on strapless, but that was among the BMs, the bride didn't care. It was a beach wedding so a little more casual , but lthe girls still looked very unified. I think it's definitely a great idea! If I can get pics for you, I will definitely post them.

my FSIL is getting married next May and she is having us pick out our own style of dress but she told us which fabric and which designer (B2, chiffon). There are certain girls that don't like strapless and some that don't look good in straps so she figured it would be easier for us to choose which style looks best on us and makes us more comfortable.

I let my girls pick out their own dresses. Each girl is shaped different so I wanted them to wear the style they look best in and feel comfortable with.
We had a great time finding the right dress for each girl, they all love having their own dress, and I think it's interesting to see all the different styles.
We chose Bill Levkoff, Satin Navy Blue. And they are all picking out their own silver shoes.

i told my bridesmaids i wanted black dresses and that i wanted them to tie in together somehow. we all went to bridal reflections and i just let them go crazy and pick what they wanted. these are the dresses they picked....
I was just in a bridal party where the bride had this idea-- said whatever you like in this fabric, this color in David's bridal.
Turns out that there were only 3 of us and 2 of us liked the same strapless version so all three went with it-- but it was nice that she let us choose
If you just say blue that might be tricky with matching colors-- but if you pick a blue by a designer and have them wear that color in the same fabric but with any dress that would definitely work!

My friend did this last October with berry colored dresses (some with light pink accents) and it looked great. She got a lot of compliments on us all having different dresses. I could probably dig up some pics of that and FM to you if you'd like to see. I think it's a great idea - gives each girl a little personality.
I'm doing the same thing, but my girls are all wearing black with red accents (bow, lace, whatever).
The only thing I would recommend (especially if you're thinking blue) is that you pick out a designer that you like several dresses from and have the girls stick to that designer so that the blue's match. Or... make sure you check the swatches of each designer carefully. Blue's can be tricky!

I am planning on doing the same thing- pick a designer-fabric & color and let the girls pick what fits them best. It is the worst feeling to be in a dress that you feel uncomfortable in. Letting them pick their own- they will (hopefully) be comfortable.
I also looked at it as I'm not telling them how much they have to spend on the dress. Sometimes people thing something isn't too much but those who lay out the money might think it is.

Here's the problem with that. Cobalt blue is not the same in every brand. So while it may be in the same family, it won't look uniform because there will be a variety of shapes, sizes, cuts, styles, fabrics etc. There are so many dresses out there, you are bound to find one you and your bm's love. If you still don't and you want them to pick their own, I would suggest picking your color and fabric from davids bridal and letting them choose whatever style they want. Atleast then they will be coordinated but still get to choose the style they like.

i agree... you really have to get them all at the same place... also, a problem my sister had when she was going to do this was a few girls wanted to wear the same dress... shes said either they are all different or all the same...
at my cousins wedding there were 3 BM's and we all wore different dresses in the same color... I loved it...

I am a BM in my brother-in-law's wedding and his fiance (who is on here somewhere!) is letting us do the same thing. We all picked different Alfred Angelo dresses in the same color (celadon). I think it will look really nice. The wedding is in a few weeks, so I will post pics. I just picked up my dress, and I love it.

Yes, I told my girls what color and where to get it and they can pick out their own dresses but I'm making sure they get it from the same place or else the colors won't match.

I plan on choosing one color from one store (i.e. David's Bridal) and letting my bridesmaids choose. If they all want to wear the same dress that's fine too. I just don't want two in one dress and the rest in all different ones. We'll have to see how it goes. I think it looks just as nice as everyone in the same dress though. IMO. Good luck!

agreed... a dress may look good on one BM but on another may not look right and the BM might feel uncomfortable for the whole evening. You have to keep your BM's happy especially with the dress you pick for them. In most cases, the BMs are paying for their own dresses and it really wouldn't be fair to have them pay $200 for a dress the uncomfortable in.

My BM's chose the dresses they wanted as long as it was the same color so they chose dresses that were from the same designer.

This is a GREAT idea. We're having a black and white wedding. My Maid of honor and my Matron of Honor at wearing black and white, different dresses but similar, by the same designer. My BMs are all wearing black and picking out their dresses as well. We're going to pick the designer and the material and then they can pick out these dresses. I've been in 3 weddings this year and some of the dresses I couldn't wait to NOT wear them. I would rather have my girls buy a dress that they can wear again and be comfortable in what their body types are (they each have different body types) then me worry about what I would want to wear if I was in the bridal party. I think personally it's a GREAT idea to do but make sure you pick the same material and designer otherwise the cobalt might not look the same. My bridal place told me that though so they'll help you (The Wedding Plaza in Floral Park...LOVE THEM THERE!)

I used the Impressions line and got 3 diff dresses in the same color ... they all matched fine... i just specified that the length had to all be the same ... my MOH wore a halter, bm's wore a strapless, and jr's wore a spaghetti strapped dress...
ETA: just make sure they are all the same material or else the colors will end up differing a bit.... ex: mine had all chiffon material

I did this and it was a nightmare getting everyone to pick a dress - they all wanted to be matching! I stuck to my idea and all 6 picked something different - same color/fabric/designer/length - different style.
