Brooklyn Diocese Annulment?

I'm new to these boards, but would really appreciate if anyone can help me with the process of an annulment in the Brooklyn diocese. Not actually the process, but their experience (time wise, who they dealt with), etc.

What is the process when you goto the tribunal for the first time?

What are acceptable reasons?

How long did the process take?

Do they assign you a priest?

Re: Brooklyn Diocese Annulment?

I dont have much info, but we approached the church about having FH's prior marriage annuled so that we could marry in the Catholic Church - we were told the process can take up to 2 years...you have to make a so-called 'donation' of approx. $5,000 AND the ex-spouse can CONTEST the annulment and hold you up even more.

We're now getting married in the Episcopal church. The Bishop reviewed FHs divorce decree and approved it - done within 2 wks, no 'donation' and no one could contest a thing.

Good luck to you guys though!

Re: Brooklyn Diocese Annulment?

OMG! $5,000.00 !!!! That is so wrong on so many levels! Sometimes the Catholic church dissapoints me so much! Marriage is supposed to be forever yadda yadda yadda but for the right price.... And they have the nerve to call it a 'donation'

I would get married at a non Catholic church if I were in your position, maybe a congregational church.

Re: Brooklyn Diocese Annulment?

I know bits and pieces of the process, though my parents were going to do it though the Rockville Center diocese if I recall...

I know that my mom and step-father had to go to sessions, my father, my step-father's ex-wife, and both of my grandmother's had to give testimony's. My mom had to anwser this long questioneer with questions like 'what did you do on your honeymoon.'

My mom and step-father had been legally married for about 10 years before they started doing this (it was his aunts wish on her death bed that they be married in the catholic church... )

But hey, since they were both getting annulments from they're first marriages, they were getting a special discount on price

They never fully went through with the process though, partially cuz I had such a fit about it (i read a pamphlet they had sent about it, which is now fondly known as the 'annulment weekly' and it basically said that you were admitting that the marriage was a mistake and you were never in love and it never happened. And frankly I wasn't too thrilled with the idea that i was born of a loveless marriage, which is untrue). And partially because my mother was getting fed up with the whole process, and the questions they were asking.

I know, I probably over reacted, but the annulment weekly just gave me a bad taste in my mouth...

Anyways, sorry for my rant, and good luck with whatever you decide...
