Buffet or Sit Down?

Buffet or Sit Down?

I only have 5 months to go - and I still cannot decide! I love the idea of a buffet becuase it's more social. But the sit-down is more traditional. I used to be a caterer for weddings, so I know that in a sit-down, some tables get served long after the head table. Any opinions? What is everybody doing? (I have about 180 people)

I like the sit down. There is always a long line for the buffet too. I know what you mean about the delay in serving some tables, but now that it will be YOU on the dais, maybe it is a good thing the dais eats first, because then you can go and greet the tables that have finished eating as they finish. I told my FH since we are paying, we are eating! I plan to go to at least 2 tables after we finish each course.

That's a great point. Being traditional Italian, we are going around to the tables (I hate this idea but my FH says we have to. ). The sit down will make this easier for everybody And you are right - sometimes the buffet line is busier than Atlantic City!

We're having a Sit Down dinner, and a buffet Rehearsal Dinner.

I think a sit-down is more traditional too. Our cocktail hour will be buffet style and the reception is sit-down. I'm not sure about the rehearsal dinner, but I would imagine it would be sit-down as well.

We're having a buffet. We're having about 13 courses so they'll be set up in stations to minimize the lines. We have about 130 people coming. I'm envisioning the reception more as a really good, social and low key party.

We are also having a sit down dinner for about 200 people. I think buffet would make the lines too long for the servers to handle.

It depends on the formality and atmosphere you want.

A formal affair should be a sitdown, IMO since waiting in line and scooping up your own food is better suited for a casual function.

I think a buffet is better for a smaller wedding (under 150). I think with 180 people it might get a little hectic. Just my opinion -

I know what you mean. I like both, too. We went with sit down, becuase it is cheaper. I thought that the buffet would be cheaper, but since there are more options and more food for a buffet, it actually is more expensive. I think the trend is towards stations (which I think is a euphamism for buffet) and I have been to some very nice wedding receptions that had stations rather than a sit down. It might be a trend in MD, actually, because the last few weddings I attended were down here! Personally, I like to be served. But I am sure it will be beautiful either way.

sit down, i think its more classy & relaxing to be served. buffet style in the cocktail hour is enough

We are having sit down also, one of the main reasons being is that I was at a wedding once on a buffet line, trying to hold my plate and grab a roll at the same time, and being the spaz that I am ended up spilling chicken marsala gravy all down the front of my dress. I was mortified then, but its funny now...I just know Im not taking that chance again
