Re: Butter not kept in fridge?????
Ok I did this for a long time. Never use to but my old Boyfriend started me doing this and it doesn't go bad and it is actually nice because the butter is always soft.

Re: Butter not kept in fridge?????
I have never in my whole life put butter in the fridge (well I do until I'm ready to use it) and IT DOES NOT GO BAD!!! Granted, I use it a lot, so it's not like it's on the counter for weeks at a time (I wouldn't recommend keeping it out for more than a week because it can taste rancid). But honestly, as long as it's covered (in a butter dish) there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with it!!! And it's always nice & soft.
yes...there is NOTHING wrong with doing that...DH converted me to doing it (the reason we have butter dishes...) and I love it...b/c as stated...its so soft and easy to spread...
true you can get spreads...but come on...they taste gross and they have cancer causing trans fatty acids...
There is very little risk associated with butter, even left at room temperature for long periods of time. If anything the butter might mold if left out for many days [I have never ever seen this happen], but it is probably not a safety issue. The very small amount of water and high levels of salt in most butter make it a very safe product.
Regular margarine is similar to butter in safety and stability. Some of the “light” margarines contain relatively higher levels of water. There is a slight possibility of these becoming contaminated — say by using a dirty knife to cut a pat to spread on your bread — but that is pretty far fetched as well.

Re: Butter not kept in fridge?????
I had 2 roommates in college who were from Pennsylvania, and both insisted on keeping the butter on the counter. I thought it was gross, so it was a constant battle. They would take it out of the fridge and I would put it back in. Since then, I have known other people originally from PA and they do the same thing. When I want it soft, I just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds.

Re: Butter not kept in fridge?????
Yes - people do leave it out but I don't know why. It's so much easier to leave it in the fridge and probably keeps a lot longer. I have met people who keep cooked meat covered and in the closet for a few days too! Strange!!!
I really think it depends how long it takes you to use butter...
we literally go through a stick in 2 days...
I don't care what you think...I love my butter soft and you people don't know what you are missing when you spread soft butter (I mean really soft butter) on toast that has just come out of the toaster...and it instantly melts...
