Re: Buttercream vs. Fondant
ive heard that Fondant tastes like kitty litter, but its much easier to decorate with. Like i said long ago, FMIL is a former wedding consultant thing, (im not sure what the right word is), but i do know that her, and her daughter (who was previously engaged and went to ma few tastings) both told me to sacrifice the pretty design and make it taste good instead. lol
Butter cream does taste better but fondant looks more crisp and nicer decorated !

Re: Buttercream vs. Fondant
depends on what type of cake you want...fondant goes on alot smoother and easier to shape. So when you see cakes that look very smooth and have more intricate designs then its usually fondant. Based on taste thats all on you, many ppl don't like the taste of fondant bc many bakeries buy the fondant from another place but some, not many bakers make their own fondant which will taste good, some even use rice krispies with it. Ive had some fondant that actually tastes great. But if you want a fondant look to the cake but don't want the taste you can always get a cake made of fondant but make only one layer with real cake inside which will be the layer you cut into and the rest will be molds of a cake with fondant over it and serve your guests sheet cake.
There is also a big difference in price between buttercream and fondant. Buttercream is about $1-2 a slice and fondant is average of $6-8 a slice and for more complicated designs can be more

fondant is very very sweet it is like eat a box of sugar. Buttercream is better. Also with Fondant you will be paying much much more like 100-300 dollars more. HTH

My mom told me to use Fondant but they put buttercream under the fondant so you still have icing and can peal off the icky fondant !!

honestly it would end up costing even more than that...fondant is even more than twice as much per slice
if you get a buttercream cake for 200 @ 2 a slice it will cost $400...if you get a fondant cake for 200 @ $7 a slice, which is the norm, then it would be $1,400 so $1000 more

Re: Buttercream vs. Fondant
You can easily peel off fondant, so if you find a cake you love that is made with fondant, put buttercream or any other frosting underneath and the RH will peel back the fondant layer before they serve it to your guests.

You don't have to do this, it takes time and can get messy...all you need to do is tell the baker to also make sheetcake which will have no fondant on it...they keep this in the back and gets served to your guests. This is what bakeries do and the option they would suggest

but would that be even more $$ and waisting all that cake ???

no it actually comes out cheaper i mentioned it above how its done but here ill write it again...see the cake you have wont all be real cake...its just one layer that is real cake that you and your fh will cut into...the rest will be molds of cake with the fondant over it, nobody will know theres no cake inside...and when they serve your guests cake it will be with the sheetcake they keep in the back...some ppl do this JUST to save money on the fondant cake.
