buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

I am going tomorrow to pick out my menu and cake. Which is the best type of icing to get? does it matter? What will most people like the best?

Thanks!
Kelly

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

i don't like fondant, although it looks pretty. butter cream holds up better, especially if the cake will be out the whole time. I like whipped cream the best, it doesn't taste fake and sugary like the butter cream.

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

I agree - fondant is pretty, but is a very strong taste - not everyone likes it. Buttercream is good, but not sure how well it holds up if the cake will be outside on display. If it will be indoors I would think either buttercream or whipped cream is good.

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

We went to do our menu & cake today(it was great!) We chose whipped cream that will look like fondant. Fondant made the price of the cake go up & the baker swears it will look just like it, I like the taste of whipped cream better. My Fi picked the filling 1/2 chocolate and 1/2 Vanilla with rasberry chocolate mousse filling!!!
I can't wait to taste it! You'll have fun picking out everything, let us know how it goes!

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

I would definitely go with the whipped cream - because I like it the best, and being that I will be a guest at your wedding, eating your wedding cake, that is what I recommend!!!!!!!! LOL

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

I would stay away from the fondant. I have yet to meet someone that likes it. Even when I went to the bakeries they told me not to pick it.

Thanks everyone!

Richesbride: your cake sounds yummy! I hope the WM has raspberry chocolate mouse also.

Marnles: OK, just because YOU like whipped cream, we will go with it! I do have to make my favorite guest happy don't I? Does this mean I get to pick out the filling in your cake?

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

this is definitely a matter of taste, and what you envision your cake to be like on the day of your wedding...

Fondant was the best choice for us, b/c I wanted a very intricate design to my cake, and buttercream and whipped cream would not hold up.

Also, you must consider if you want your cake on display during your reception. Whipped cream cakes and most buttercream one (IF it's made with real butter, not shortening) must be refridgerated.

Regarding taste, I think buttercream is much, much sweeter than fondant and a very different texture.
I usually prefer buttercream (yum!), but fondant just makes for a prettier presentation in my opinion.

We are going with whippen cream as well. It is the only one that I like so it wasn't a tough decision for us.

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

I agree with Claud2001. Certain designs require fondant- so there is no choice. I am a huge fan of buttercream. Fondant is the best chose for a summer wedding since it will hold up better.
Also, Italian Meriqune (sp?) is another idea. That is what I am getting. It is similar to buttercream but holds up better. It is not as smooth as fondant.

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

This is the design that our cake will have, it will be square & have sugared fruits-white grapes, plums & pears.
Our baker says he can use whiiped cream to make it look like this. i agree more elaborate styles requie fondant.

Claude2001

Is the cake in the picture from your wedding? Did you go with a baker in Queens? I was just wondering if I was using the same person.

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

My cake design was chosen from a picture that I found in Bridal Guide magazine. The original design was by Regula's Cakes. However, my actual cake was made by Cakeline Couture in Belle Harbor, NY.

Claud2001: I recognized your cake! I am also using Cynthia and she shows your cake as a sample. I thought it was great.

I am also using Cakeline. Were you happy with the taste of the cake? What fillings did you have?

Re: buttercream, whipped cream or fondant?????

irenie - congrats on using Cynthia - she is an artist! You will be soooo happy! Our cake was chocolate devil's food with chocolate mousse and chocolate raspberry buttercream. It was so delicious that friends and family who normally don't eat cake even raved about how tasty it was.

In fact, I contacted Cynthia again after our 1st anniversary to tell her that the cake was just as delicious one year later! It really was!

This past weekend, Cynthia made my son's christening cake. It was also a work of art...the talk of our party (besides how adorable the guest of honor was!) She even learned how to make a new filling for this cake, which was white cake and cannoli filling...delicious also!
