Butterflies

Has anyone seen a butterfly release? I am getting married in Nov, so I wouldn't do it for fear of the butterflies freezing to death, but I thought it was interesting for some of you summer brides.

I was at a wedding with the butterfly release. Yes, it was beautiful...and a nice way to include the guests in the church-exiting time.

You are so right!!! It is the little things. Maybe I can have my bridal party open them up. That way it will only be 12 and since we are inside the butterflies won't freeze. Do you think people would mind butterflies flying around?

Vanderbilt Mansion in Oakdale. It is on the grounds of Dowling College. The have a courtyard with a fountain where we are having the ceremony. If it rains we can use the conservatory. The cocktail hour is on the veranda by the Connetquot River. The reception is in the ballroom. They do not have many weddings there each year. We were looking for a mansion or castle that did not have a large rental fee. I do not think it is as nice as Oheka, but is also less than half the price. You can email me if you want more details.

I don't think you should settle for less than exactly what you want. You only et married once and you want to feel special. you don't sound so sure of your decision, so check websites and ask others to look around for you. The women on this site will ALWAYS give you honest feedback and I can bet someone here has looked at the site you are considering.

Rachel - The only things I ever heard about them is that most of them are dead when they arrive. People don't know that until they open to release. It's been known to be a little morbid. I would highly warn against it.

E-mail me if you want further directions.

Butterflies

I have done some research on the butterfly release as I am thinking about it for my own wedding. I would definitely just have the bridal party open them up because of 1-the cost and 2- the number of butterflies I would like flying around.

In the back of bridal magazines I have found two distributors both from CA but one preps the butterflies and sends them the day before the wedding for release and the other ships the lava and you have to prep them. This is the one I have heard many of the butterflies are dead the first I mentioned gives you a guarantee that less than 1% would come deceased if that many.

Good luck.

I would also recommend NOT using the butterflies. Sure buterflies are beautiful and colorful, but they are also very much alive and are not meant to be shipped in envelopes. I went to two weddings and they were the topic of conversation all night because half of them were dead. It was SOO sad!! Also, some people did not want to partake in the releasing because they thought it was cruel..Just an opinion..

Instead of butterflies, you might want to consider a dove release or have 2 doves in a cage during your reception. I am having 24 doves released after my ceremony and I think that next to the personalized vows, this is my next favorite part about our ceremony.

If anyone is interested they are on the web. www.dovereleases.com

There is also the concern that a lot of environmentalists have, and that is the fact that the butterflies are not native to this area, and they will mate with the native butterflies, thereby "watering down" the native population.

Just putting the info out there just in case there are people concerned with something like that.

Dove Release

I am having my wedding in November and I was considering a dove release, however, when I contacted them, they said they dont do two-dove releases anymore...only 24 because they need to fly together to insure they return to their home. (more risk of lost birds when they fly alone or in pairs) I really didnt want to do a 24 bird realease. Too much! I would love to see one though...When is yours?

51 more days!! 7/2/00!

Then we heard rumors that they were going bankrupt (just a rumor, but numerous people were saying that they had heard the same thing - as well as the person at the Townhouse didn't deny it).

Butterfiles & Dove Releases

are bad for the ecology and bad for the butterflies and doves. Its not a good thing to take creatures from their natural environment, bring them to another one and set them free. All sorts of issues get raised, how will they feed themselves? being detached from their environment, predators, how their presence will affect the life balance of the creatures in the new area?

For the moment or 2 of pleasure it gives you, these creatures have to deal with it for quite some time to come.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big animal activist. In fact, I wanted to do this as well. But after everything I've read, I've come to learn that this is just a bad thing to do.

Butterfiles & Dove Releases

Actually, the doves are homing pigeons that do return to their home. That is why they are released in even numbers. They pair up and fly home together.

I THINK TO JUST WALK DOWN.... NOT TO THROW PETALS.I DONT THINK I WOULD WANT MY SON THROWING PETALS. BUT EVERYONES DIFFERENT....

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for shower locations in NYC? that aren't very expensive? Maybe a place that can be rented for the day that allow outside cateres. Thanks in advance.

Butterfiles & Dove Releases

Maybe I can go to Robert Moses and catch a few sea gulls- that'll work!! (just kidding- they would stick around and beg for food) lol

So, after spending like 2 hours on line, I've discovered that my dress is designed by Catherine Rayner. She's a UK designer. Has a website but my dress is not pictured, and I can't find it anywhere. Oh well, I'll keep looking.

Dove Release

"Love is in the Air" is the name of the place. They will release 26 white homing pigeons (look just like doves) from nicely decorated baskets. The husband and wife release 24 and the bride and groom each release one. The birds will be released after the ceremony and the cost $400. I am getting married in September so hopefully the weather is good.

Just to let you know, they will not release the doves if it is raining. They will give you a full refund, but they will absolutely not do it. I was okay with that, after all I don't think I would want them released in the rain myself.

They have a website www.dovereleases.com if you are interested.
